Gauff's French Open dream crushed by inspired Potapova

Image
By Mishael Emmanuel        Here's a refined, publication-ready version with a stronger news flow, improved readability, and a more professional sports-writing tone: Defending French Open champion Coco Gauff suffered a shock third-round exit at Roland Garros on Saturday, falling 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 to Austria's Anastasia Potapova. The fourth seed appeared on course to continue her title defence after taking the opening set and moving a break ahead in the decider. However, Potapova produced a remarkable comeback to secure one of the biggest victories of her career. "I think I've had a few big wins before, but I'd put this in my top three for sure," Potapova said after the match, having recorded her third career victory over Gauff. Despite dropping her opening service game, Gauff quickly settled into the contest.  The American broke Potapova in the eighth and 10th games to claim the first set and seize the early advantage. Potapova responded emphatica...

Roland Garros chief will not alter cash prizes

Image
French Open Director Amélie Mauresmo categorically confirmed on Thursday that the reward standards will remain unchanged for this year's edition of the marquee tennis tournament, dismissing rising protests from top tour stars. The buzz started at the beginning of the month but the complaint has been brewing for some time now and grown louder as the Paris event neared. However, rumors were put to rest this week when, during the draw for Roland Garrros, which is already in its qualifying phase, Mauresmo stated firmly, "No, we're not going to change anything"; though she added that officials are open to future discussions with the players' union, the Professional Tennis Players Association, a body founded in 2020 by current World-ranked number four player Novak Djokovic -who left earlier this year-, and former pro Vasek Pospisil. In fact, it was confirmed that the all-time great Djokovic decided to stay on the sidelines and did not sign the latest joint s...

Swiatek splits with coach Fissette after shock Miami open exit

Image
By Maxwell Kumoye        Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek has split from coach Wim Fissette following a difficult start to her 2026 campaign, the Polish star confirmed on Monday. The decision comes in the aftermath of her early exit at the Miami Open, where Swiatek suffered a three-set defeat to fellow Pole Magda Linette in the second round, her opening match of the tournament. Swiatek’s struggles in Miami continued a run of underwhelming results this season, with quarter-final exits at the Australian Open, Qatar Open, and Indian Wells Open. Reflecting on her recent form, the 24-year-old admitted to mixed emotions. “Sometimes life and sports bring moments like this... Miami was challenging for me. I feel disappointment, bitterness and responsibility for my performance on the court,” she wrote on Instagram, while acknowledging the lessons learned during a turbulent stretch. Swiatek also confirmed that she and Fissette, who began working together in...

Third seed Novak Djokovic overcame a second-set reverse to beat American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4 1-6 6-4 at Indian Wells on Monday and ‌reach the last 16 for the first time since 2017. The 24-times Grand Slam champion, who has won a record-equalling five titles at the California desert event, won the first set but was taken apart in the second before asserting his authority to seal victory in two hours and two minutes.   "Great performance from Alex," Djokovic said. "We know each other, we speak the same language, obviously, his whole family is Serbian. He's one of the best talents we have out there, particularly, one-handed backhand and, you know, it's very rare nowadays, and he's played a great tournament so ‌far.   "Today I knew if he serves well and if he picks his spot in the box, it's going to be hard to break. That's what happened, actually. I mean, he was serving extremely well," the 38-year-old added.   In the women...

Alcaraz blitzes Fils to storm Doha and extend winning run

Image
By Mishael Emmanuel      Carlos Alcaraz delivered a masterclass in controlled destruction on Saturday, dismantling Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-1 to capture the Qatar Open title in ruthless fashion. It took just over 50 minutes. That was all the world No. 1 needed to slice through the 40th-ranked Frenchman and clinch the 26th title of his already glittering career.  From the first thunderous forehand to the final whipped winner, Alcaraz was untouchable, sharp, explosive, and utterly relentless. Fresh off his triumph at the Australian Open earlier this month, where he completed a career Grand Slam at just 22, the Spaniard showed no signs of slowing down.  Doha was his first outing since Melbourne, and he tore through the draw without blinking, stretching his match-winning streak to 12. Fils arrived in the final riding a wave of confidence after impressive wins over top-10 seeds Jakub Mensik and Jiri Lehecka. But against Alcaraz at full throttle, the fairytale r...

At the heart of it all was Daniel Adeleye, calm, ruthless and unshakeable when it mattered most. With Nigeria holding a 2–1 advantage after the doubles, Adeleye sealed the tie in style, dispatching Ilya Ignatov 6–3, 6–4 to hand the hosts an unassailable 3–1 lead and spark celebrations at the historic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, 1895. It was a statement win. Not just of a tie, but of a sport clearly on the rise. Nigeria’s campaign was built on grit and clarity of purpose. After Saturday’s singles ended evenly at 1–1, the momentum ...

Image
...Djokovic aiming for sole ownership of Grand Slam title record ..Serb would become oldest winner of a major title with victory over Alcaraz ...Spain's Alcaraz bidding to become youngest men's player to win all four majors   Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz meet in Sunday's Australian Open final with history in the balance, as the Serbian great chases a record 25th Grand Slam title and the Spanish dynamo bids to become the youngest man to win all four majors. Modern men's tennis has not lacked for champions pushing for the next frontier of greatness but the stakes have rarely been higher in a single match.   With 24 major trophies and a record 10 at Melbourne Park, Djokovic's legacy is already secure.   Few can argue there have been better players to grace the men's game.   And yet Djokovic's record remains bracketed with Australian icon Margaret Court, who also won 24 titles in the women's game, including 13 in the amateur era.   Wit...

Sixth seeds Neal Skupski and Christian Harrison defeated Australia's wildcard pairing of Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans 7-6(4) 6-4 to capture the Australian Open men's doubles title on Saturday in their first Grand Slam event as a team.   The British-American duo's victory at Rod Laver Arena gave Harrison his first Grand Slam title and marked Skupski's fourth in doubles and mixed doubles, though his first outside Wimbledon.   The partnership is remarkably fresh, as the pair started playing together only two weeks ago in Adelaide after training for a week together in Baton Rouge in December.   ★ SKUPSKI SILENCES RAUCOUS HOME FANS   "We obviously started playing together in Adelaide two weeks ago now," Skupski said.   "We didn't know obviously how it would go. It seems to be going pretty well so far!"   With the roof closed at Rod Laver Arena due to the rain, the match began at a fast pace under the lights and proved to be an enterta...

Image
Fourth seeds Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai won the Australian Open women's doubles title on Saturday with a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory over Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic, claiming their first Grand Slam trophy as a duo.   The victory handed Mertens her sixth Grand Slam title while Zhang won her third but the triumph almost never happened, with the Belgian-Chinese pair forced to save three match points in the second round against teenagers Iva Jovic and Victoria Mboko.   "It's been quite a week so far," said Mertens, who is set to move up to world number one in the doubles rankings.   "I'm lost for words. In the second round of doubles, we had three match points against us. We kept on fighting, we kept on believing and we really grew as a team. Today, in the final, I'm happy that I served it out eventually.   "It's the first week that we've actually played together and what a result. It's been amazing." Danilina and Krun...
