Defending French Open champion Coco Gauff suffered a shock third-round exit at Roland Garros on Saturday, falling 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 to Austria's Anastasia Potapova.

The fourth seed appeared on course to continue her title defence after taking the opening set and moving a break ahead in the decider. However, Potapova produced a remarkable comeback to secure one of the biggest victories of her career.

"I think I've had a few big wins before, but I'd put this in my top three for sure," Potapova said after the match, having recorded her third career victory over Gauff.

Despite dropping her opening service game, Gauff quickly settled into the contest.

The American broke Potapova in the eighth and 10th games to claim the first set and seize the early advantage.

Potapova responded emphatically in the second set, breaking twice to surge into a 3-0 lead. But her momentum was briefly disrupted as both players struggled to hold serve, with the next five games all ending in breaks.

The Austrian squandered two set points on her own serve, allowing Gauff a lifeline.

The two-time Grand Slam champion capitalised, holding serve before breaking back to level the set at 5-5.

Potapova regained her composure to force a tie-break, where she dominated.

A costly double fault left Gauff trailing 5-0, and although the American managed to get on the scoreboard, Potapova closed out the breaker with authority to level the match.

The deciding set remained finely balanced until Gauff struck first, breaking in the third game to move ahead. Potapova, however, immediately responded and drew level at 3-3.

The Austrian then survived a tense service game, saving two break points before holding firm.

With the pressure mounting, Potapova produced a superb backhand winner and benefited from a Gauff forehand error to edge ahead 5-4.

Serving to stay in the tournament, Gauff led 30-0 but suddenly unravelled. Potapova seized the opportunity, sealing victory when the American sent a return long.

The Austrian collapsed to the clay in celebration as Gauff's title defence came to an abrupt end.

Potapova will now face 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the quarter-finals.
