Former FC Barcelona star Gerard Pique fined for insider trading

Image
Former FC Barcelona and Spain star Gerard Pique has been fined €200,000 for insider trading.   On Monday, the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), Spain’s market regulator, announced that the 2010 World Cup winner was punished after buying shares in a health and safety company two days before it was revealed to be a takeover target. The regulator said it was a “very serious offence”.  According to the regulator, Pique purchased 104,166 shares of Aspy Global Services, a workplace health and safety firm, on 20 January 2021. The purchase followed a tip from a businessman that Atrys Health was in negotiations to acquire the company. Two days later, the acquisition talks were made public. By 26 January, Atrys had officially launched a €223million bid for Aspy, resulting in a stock price surge of nearly 20 percent.   The regulator did not reveal how much Pique made from the insider trading.   The CNMV identified Francisco Jose Elias Nava...

FIFA amps up social messaging campaign ahead of 2026 World Cup

Image
With exactly one month until kickoff, FIFA has begun rolling out the social messaging that will accompany the 2026 World Cup across North America, as the governing body looks to shift at least part of the conversation away from the growing scrutiny surrounding tournament costs and accessibility. The campaigns – centred around peace, education, anti-racism and physical activity – will feature throughout the competition via stadium screens, LED boards and player sleeve badges across all 16 host venues. FIFA’s flagship “Football Unites the World” initiative once again forms the backbone of the programme, with “Unite for Peace” set to be promoted during the group stage and “Unite for Education” carrying through the knockout rounds. All 48 participating teams and match officials will wear campaign sleeve patches during selected stages of the tournament, while FIFA will also use the platform to highlight initiatives including the FIFA Foundation Refugee Programme and the FIFA Glo...

NFL players union questions why FIFA can have grass in their stadiums, and they can’t

Image
The NFL Players Association has issued what amounts to a public scolding of league owners, after 11 NFL stadiums currently fitted with artificial turf confirmed they will install high-quality natural grass for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, only to rip it back up once the tournament leaves town. In a pointed post on X, the NFLPA wrote: “NFL players have spent years advocating for safer, high-quality grass fields at their place of work, but when the World Cup is over, most of these stadiums will revert back to turf for the NFL season. Our players deserve workplaces that prioritize their preference, protect them against the weekly wear and tear of the game, and support their long-term health and performance.” The reminder is that owners are willing to provide athletes from a different sport the very surface NFL players have been asking for, year after year. The reason these stadiums are going to grass is as simple as FIFA demanding it as a condition of hosting. When it comes to the...

UEFA unveils European final referees

Image
UEFA has unveiled the refereeing appointments for this month’s European club finals, with German official Daniel Siebert handed the marquee assignment of the season – the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal in Budapest.  Despite years operating at the top level of the European game, 42-year-old Siebert has never previously taken charge of a UEFA club final. That changes on May 30 at the Puskás Aréna, where Arsenal will attempt to lift Europe’s biggest prize against a PSG side looking to claim consecutive titles. UEFA’s Referees Committee has clearly rewarded trust and familiarity. Siebert has officiated nine Champions League matches this season, including Arsenal’s quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP and their semi-final second leg with Atlético Madrid. He also handled last year’s Europa League semi-final between Manchester United and Athletic Club. ✓ 2026 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL REFEREEING TEAM IN FULL: ★Referee: Daniel Siebert (G...

Inter Miami sign up with co-owner Beckham’s IM8

Image
Major League Soccer champions Inter Miami have announced IM8 as their official health supplements partner, in a deal that also sees the club take an equity stake in parent company Prenetics, the health business co-owned by David Beckham.  Financial terms were not disclosed, but the agreement marks the first time the club has taken an equity position in a brand partner.  Under the deal, IM8 will supply its core products, including The Beckham Stake, to all Inter Miami players and staff. IM8 also secures group NIL rights over four Inter Miami players, headlined by Lionel Messi.  Danny Yeung, Prenetics chief executive and IM8 co-founder, said: “Inter Miami has never taken equity in a brand partner before – they have now, and that partner is Prenetics. That alone tells you what the club thinks of IM8.”  Branding will appear inside the Nutritional Center at the Florida Blue Training Center in Fort Lauderdale and across the newly opened Nu Stadium, including LE...

Iran demands respect as it lays out guarantees needed for 2026 participation

Image
Iran has demanded a series of guarantees from FIFA and the United States over its participation in the 2026 World Cup this summer. The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) said its national team would compete at the tournament “without any retreat from our beliefs, culture and convictions”, while insisting the hosts “must take our concerns into account”. Earlier this month, Canada denied FFIRI president Mehdi Taj entry to the country before the FIFA congress, citing his links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a group which is listed as a terrorist organisation in Canada. For last year’s World Cup draw in Washington D.C., some members of the Iranian delegation were also denied visas by US authorities. The Iranians are demanding guarantees that all players, coaches and officials travelling with the team will receive visas, including those who completed military service with the IRGC. They also want respect for Iran’s flag and national anthem and demand enhanced ...

AviaGames agrees Argentine FA sponsorship focussed on content in mobile games

Image
AviaGames has partnered with the Argentine Football Association as a regional sponsor in a move designed to bring World Cup-themed football content into its portfolio of mobile games ahead of this summer’s tournament. The agreement will see Argentina-inspired activations rolled out across several of Avia’s best-performing titles, including Solitaire Clash, 8 Ball Strike, Bingo Tour and Pocket 7 Games, as brands continue looking for new ways to tap into football audiences beyond traditional sponsorship inventory. For the AFA, the deal represents another example of the commercial momentum the federation has continued to generate since Lionel Messi led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar, even with the captain now aged 38. Messi remains central to much of the campaign creative. In 8 Ball Strike, football-themed billiards content will feature stylised versions of Messi, Enzo Fernández and Emiliano Martínez, while Solitaire Clash will launch an “Argentina Collaboratio...

EFL clubs upgrade stadia with TVC roll-out of improved AV solutions

Image
TVC Technology Solutions has completed a major AV rollout across 30 English Football League clubs, as clubs continue investing heavily in technology designed to keep supporters in the stadium longer. Delivered in partnership with Uniguest, the project centred around the installation of Sky Q distribution systems throughout concourses, bars, hospitality lounges and executive areas across EFL venues. The new systems allow live broadcasts, highlights and promotional content to be distributed seamlessly across multiple stadium zones, with clubs able to tailor viewing experiences depending on the environment. In larger concourse areas, TVC deployed synchronised multi-screen display networks fed by centralised Sky Q systems, ensuring supporters remain connected to live action even while queueing for food or drinks. Elsewhere, premium hospitality areas and executive boxes were given more localised control setups, allowing guests to independently switch between live matches, replay...

Wenger heads FIFA’s new Technical Study Group

Image
FIFA has unveiled the Technical Study Group (TSG) that will dissect every match at the World Cup, and the lineup reads like a coach’s dinner party.   Arsène Wenger leads the panel as FIFA Chief of Global Football Development, joined by a roll call of recognisable football minds including Jürgen Klinsmann, Tobin Heath, Gilberto Silva, Otto Addo, Jayne Ludlow, Michael O’Neill, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Paulo Wanchope, Aron Winter, and Pablo Zabaleta.  “The Technical Study Group helps identify trends in the game, prepare future generations for football’s development and contribute to making the sport more exciting by highlighting the qualities players will need in the future,” Wenger said.  FIFA Senior Football Expert Pascal Zuberbühler and Football Performance Insights (FPI) lead Tom Gardner, backed by analysts, data engineers, and data scientists working on-site in Miami and Dallas, and off-site in Manchester in the UK, will be the back team.  FIFA wants to ...

FIFA’s calendar faces new challenge as French players’ complaint ruled admissible under European Social Charter

Image
The international calendar being enforced by FIFA is under renewed challenge in Europe after the European Committee of Social Rights ruled that the complaint by France’s players’ union (UNFP) was admissible under the European Social Charter. The players’ case – UNFP v France – focuses on the lack of minimum player protection on workload and the disregard of national collective agreements at the national level. With the complaint admissible it opens a pathway to formally examine whether France’s professional players, including minors, have the same minimum guarantees that all workers have under the European Social Charter. While the complaint is brought against France, the real pinchpoint of the case is in the structural problems of the international calendar and the new and expanded competitions that FIFA has launched into an already crowded competition eco-system. Those competitions were launched without any discussion with players’ unions. FIFA refuses to acknowledge FIFP...
