Argentina declared top digital brand among teams at FIFA World Cup

Image
Current holders Argentina has knocked France off top spot as the No. 1 digital brand among World Cup teams, according to the latest Sports Social Pulse rankings from the University of South Carolina’s Social Media Insights Lab and Sports Business Journal. At a World Cup, the football is only half the contest. The other half plays out on phones, laptops, with teams building fanbases, sponsor value and global reach that outlast any single tournament. Argentina gets it. The federation is squeezing every drop out of its 2022 triumph, flooding TikTok with championship highlights, behind-the-scenes footage and Lionel Messi content that keeps a worldwide audience hooked. The rankings weigh audience size, visibility, engagement, growth and cross-platform reach. France, top of the initial list, slipped to second. Brazil, Portugal and England complete the top five, with Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Morocco and Germany filling out the top 10. The clearest proof that results drive reach is...

World Cup winner Carlos Alberto Parreira hospitalised in cancer battle

Image
Carlos Alberto Parreira has been hospitalised in his fight against cancer. The 83-year-old World Cup winner Parreira was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2023 and in a statement the hospital said it would not provide details. The AP reported that Zinho, a member of the 1994 Brazil squad told journalists the former coach “is not in good shape” and had “lung problems that are putting him in a ventilator at the hospital.” “He is stable, we need to wait. Doctors are giving him the best care, all we can do is to pray for Parreira.” Parreira is one of the most distinguished managers in international football. He began his career in the 1960s and formed part of Brazil’s backroom staff at the 1970 World Cup when Pelé and Tostão guided the South Americans to their third World Cup. Twenty-four years later, he led Brazil to their fourth World Cup title at the 1994 iteration in the United States. He also formed a part of the Brazil setup at the 2014 World Cup when the five-time wor...

Somali women make international debut at Cecafa U17 finals, marking their exit with a record win

Image
Somali football has been in World Cup news with the US refusal to allow its World Cup referee Omar Artan into the country to officiate. It would have been a first-time engagement in the World Cup finals of anyone from Somalia and a federation that is battling to re-establish the game after years of brutal civil war. But football is more than just a World Cup and this week the Somali football women’s Under 17 football squad became the first women’s team from the country to compete in international competition at the CECAFA women’s U-17 championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The team also registered two milestones for the nation; Somalia’s biggest ever win in any football match in its history (an 8-2 win over Sudan), plus the first hat-trick in a debut international tournament scored by a Somali footballer. Najmo Mohamed celebrates her hat trick. All pictures by Abdulkadir Muse Osman Somalia’s women exited the tournament at the group stage but with the records f...

Fox breaks 1bn digital mark, closes in on baseball World Series record

Image
Fox Sports has passed one billion views for World Cup content across its digital and social platforms in just the first five days of the tournament. “We expected to get to that mark. I don’t think in a million years we expected to get to that mark in five days,” said Fox Sports SVP of digital Michael Bucklin. “The World Cup gods are shining down kindly upon us at the moment.” The pace is record-breaking. Fox is on course to beat its own digital high of 1.3 billion views, set by the 2025 Dodgers–Blue Jays World Series, with the entire 2022 World Cup (1.2 billion) now in its sights. The host nations did the early heavy lifting, with Mexico, Canada, and the US match days driving the biggest numbers before tournament favourites Argentina, France and England had even kicked off. Fox’s big bets on social are landing. The ‘Always On’ YouTube strategy is humming, with Chef Nick’s food content alone topping 100 million views, including 21 million for a Netherlands-Japan tie-in. On X...

UEFA unveils €244 million compensation package for international call-ups

Image
UEFA has further strengthened its alliance with Europe’s leading clubs after unveiling a record €244 million compensation package for teams releasing players for international duty during the cycle leading up to EURO 2028.  The scheme, agreed in tandem with the European Foootball Club organisation, will see clubs paid substantially more than they currently receive under FIFA’s equivalent World Cup programme, with UEFA keen to keep Europe’s powerful club game onside amid an increasingly crowded international calendar.  The €244 million fund represents a pile-on increase on previous cycles and will be split across UEFA’s national team competitions. Of that fund, a total of €104 million has been earmarked for player releases during UEFA Nations League fixtures and EURO 2028 qualifiers, with clubs expected to receive around €3,845 per player per day during official international windows.  The remaining €140 million will be distributed to clubs whose players featur...

World Cup teams unite with anti-hate speech exchange

Image
The eight teams in action on Thursday all marked the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, with captains exchanging pennants before kick-off in a coordinated stand against abusive language. Captains in the Czechia/South Africa, Mexico/South Korea, Switzerland/Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada/Qatar fixtures carried pennants reading ‘We Play Together. We Stand Against Hate’ with the message in English on one side and each team’s native language on the other. Further stadium activations were planned across the day. Behind the symbolism sits a hard number. FIFA says it has deleted more than 30 million abusive posts and comments since launching its social media protection service before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The tool scans players’ public accounts and hides or removes abuse before they see it. But the more striking figure is how fast the problem is scaling. FIFA says it has already removed nearly 400,000 negative or abusive posts in the opening days of this tournamen...

USL agrees league-wide deal with Kitman Labs

Image
The United Soccer League is raising the standard for how it looks after its players. The USL has expanded its partnership with Kitman Labs, the sports data and technology firm, in a new multi-year deal that puts performance medicine at the heart of the league. Every club in the second-tier USL Championship will get access to Kitman’s iP: Intelligence Platform, pulling medical and performance data into one place. The aim is to create consistent workflows across the league, better collaboration between staff, and the kind of clean data that makes real injury surveillance possible. Kitman founder and chief executive Stephen Smith said the USL has been clear about its ambition. “By committing to a league-wide Performance Medicine platform, the USL is setting a benchmark for how modern leagues can use integrated intelligence to protect athlete welfare, unlock performance insights, and build a sustainable future for the game.” This builds on last year’s deal covering the Gainbrid...

Football Association of Wales announces landmark registration figures

Image
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has reached a landmark in player registrations with 120,000 signed up for the first time – a milestone it says reflects the growth of the game across the country and the governing body’s push to make football more accessible at every level.  The 120,000 figure is up 25% from 96,000 in 2021/22.  The women’s and girls’ game has been the biggest benefactor of that inflation, which the FAW accredits to the national team’s ‘strong performances’.   The stats released by the organisation show that female registrations climbed from 13,000 to more than 21,000 over that four-year spread, an increase of over 60%, driven by initiatives including Huddle, UEFA Disney Playmakers and a wider effort to create more opportunities for girls to play.  The growth has not been limited to traditional club football either. Recreational participation has exploded from just 300 registered players four years ago to more than 7,000 this se...
