Mané scores twice but Senegal still fall to USA

Image
By Maxwell Kumoye        The United States boosted confidence ahead of the FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Senegal in an international friendly on Sunday, as Christian Pulisic starred with a goal and an assist before Folarin Balogun netted the decisive winner. The hosts made a bright start, taking the lead after just seven minutes when Sergiño Dest tapped home from close range after being picked out by Pulisic's precise cross. Pulisic then doubled the advantage in the 20th minute, showing great composure to round the goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle. Senegal responded just before halftime through captain Sadio Mané, who capped a swift counter-attack after being released by Habib Diarra's incisive through ball. Balogun thought he had restored the United States' two-goal cushion early in the second half, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Senegal took advantage moments later as Mané punished a defensive lapse to level...

Konaté ends five-year Liverpool stay as contract talks collapse

Image
By Trust Ittai  France international defender Ibrahima Konaté will bring his five-year spell at Liverpool to an end when his contract expires next month, the Premier League champions announced on Sunday. The 27-year-old centre-back joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 in a deal worth £36 million ($48 million) and had indicated in April that he was close to agreeing a new contract with the club. However, British media reports suggest negotiations eventually broke down over wage demands, paving the way for Konaté to depart as a free agent.  He follows Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in leaving the Mersey side club at the end of the season. In an emotional message posted on social media, Konaté expressed his disappointment at not being able to bid farewell to Liverpool supporters following the club’s final home game of the campaign against Brentford. “Anfield is truly a special place, and playing in front of you was something I never took for granted,” Konaté wro...

NCAA pipeline producing champions, but visa barriers and local failures stall Nigeria's University sports growth

Image
By Maxwell Kumoye     The recently concluded NCAA outdoor athletics season once again highlighted why the American collegiate system remains one of the world's most effective talent development structures, producing elite athletes who continue to dominate global competitions and provide Africa, particularly Nigeria, with a steady stream of international stars. From record-breaking performances to qualification standards achieved for major global championships, Nigerian and African athletes competing within the NCAA system demonstrated the immense value of combining education with structured sports development. Yet amid the celebrations, a growing concern remains the inability of many student-athletes studying in the United States to consistently represent their countries at international competitions due to increasingly stringent visa regulations and travel restrictions. Several Nigerian athletes enrolled in American colleges have, in recent years, struggled to hon...

Uruguay head to World Cup without Suárez as Bielsa unveils final squad

Image
By Mishael Emmanuel      Uruguay will travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup without legendary striker Luis Suárez after coach Marcelo Bielsa omitted the veteran forward from his final 26-man squad announced on Sunday. Suárez, 39, retired from international football in September 2024 after his final appearance against Paraguay but had hinted at a possible return if the national team needed his experience.  However, Bielsa opted against recalling the former captain despite his impressive form for Inter Miami CF, where he scored six goals in 11 MLS matches this season. The decision comes after a turbulent period between player and coach. Suárez had publicly criticized Bielsa's management style, claiming it created divisions within the squad.  Although the striker later said he apologized, it was not enough to earn a place on the plane to North America. Uruguay's squad will be led by key stars including Federico Valverde, Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez...

The Czechs return to the global showpiece for only the second time since gaining independence following the 1993 split from Slovakia. They have been drawn in a challenging Group A alongside Mexico, South Africa and South Korea. Their only previous World Cup appearance as an independent nation came in 2006, when a star-studded squad featuring Petr Čech, Pavel Nedvěd, Tomáš Rosický and Milan Baroš exited at the group stage. Koubek has acknowledged the difficulty of the task ahead, describing Group A as "extremely tough" and expressing concerns about the climatic conditions, particularly in Mexico where the Czech Republic will play two of their group matches. The squad, popularly known as Bafana Bafana, was scheduled to leave Johannesburg on Sunday aboard a chartered flight to Mexico City.  However, the South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed that visa-related issues affecting several players and officials disrupted the travel plans. In a statement released on Sunday, SAFA revealed that the delegation had encountered challenges in securing the necessary travel documents, although the exact number of affected personnel was not disclosed. "SAFA is working around the clock to ensure that the team travels to Mexico City as soon as possible," the federation said, adding that an emergency meeting had been convened to address the situation.
