Big 5 European league revenue breaks €40bn, but Deloitte warns growth will slow

Image
European football revenues topped €40 billion for the first time in the 2024/25 season, growing by 6% to €40.2 billion, up from €38 billion in 2023/24. More than half of the revenue was accounted for by the big five European leagues who collectively generated €21.6 billion during 2024/25, a 6% increase on the €20.4 billion in 2023/24. The revenue numbers are the headline findings in the 35th edition of Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance, but come with a health warning from Deloitte who project that the growth of aggregate club revenue across Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues will slow in the coming seasons, “with some leagues experiencing a plateau or even reduction in 2025/26 and 2026/27.” Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group, said: “The expansion of UEFA and FIFA competitions has delivered financial benefits across Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues, but football cannot rely on simply adding more content to deliver sustainable growth. “An increasingly saturated...

In-fighting over Miami match, as De Jong speaks out against Villarreal-Barcelona

Image
Barcelona midfielder Frankie de Jong has criticised the decision by LaLiga to host a league meeting between his club and Villarreal in Miami on December 20, 2025. After years of wrangling, red tape, and relentless resistance from all governing bodies, LaLiga President Javier Tebas got his wish as UEFA reluctantly permitted the Spanish top-flight to stage a match abroad, potentially unlocking a pandoras box. While the match must be ratified per its final application to U.S. Soccer and Concacaf, FIFA, the world governing body, has remained quiet on the matter. In Spain, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), the Spanish players’ union AFE and several clubs, including Real Madrid, have fought hard to keep domestic football in-country, but their battle appears to have been in vain. Howeve with the debate rumbling on, De Jong has broken rank and is the first Barça player to voice his concerns about the fixture. “I don’t like that we’re going to play Barça vs Villarreal in...

Barca post losses again, but talk of financial crisis looks over as revenues near €1bn

Image
Barcelona’s latest financial report shows the Catalan giants posting a post-tax loss of only €17 million ($19.8m) for the 2024–25 season, a big reduction from the €91 million posted for the 2023-24 period. While this is the second consecutive year of losses, revenue is soaring. With Nike’s long-term deal, merchandise flying off the shelves, a deep run in the Uefa Champions League, and sell-out crowds at the Olympic Stadium, Barca revenue rose to €994m ($1.16 billion), up €100 million on the previous year. While this figure is impressive, there is a rather large elephant in the room but it is looking increasingly friendly, namely the renovation of the iconic Spotify Camp Nou. The redevelopment, a cornerstone of President Joan Laporta’s “Espai Barça” project, has transformed the club’s finances into a high-wire act between progress and prudence. When the Camp Nou finally comes online at full capacity, it is expected to inject an extra €50 million ($58m) into next season...

Barcelona renew and expand deal with Sebang

Image
La Liga Champions, FC Barcelona have renewed their partnership with Sebang Global Battery, extending their deal until 2028. To the naked eye, it looks like another routine commercial announcement, but under the surface, the deal underlines Barça’s continued reliance on external partners to prop up a balance sheet still creaking under the weight of the Nou Camp redevelopment.  The collaboration with Sebang initially focused on the UAE, but now the agreement has been expanded to include Chile, as it piggybacks on the club’s enormous South American fanbase.   Sebang has benefitted handsomely from the relationship, gaining brand visibility far beyond its traditional footprint. For the Catalan giants, however, partnerships of this ilk are no longer a bonus, they are a necessity. The club are squeezing every last drop of commercial value out of the Barça brand, from digital activations to VIP hospitality, because the cash flow is needed like water in a ...

La Liga announces new US community partnership

Image
La Liga and the US Soccer Foundation (USSF) have announced a new partnership, magnifying their collaboration as next year’s World Cup looms.  The Spanish top flight will support US fundraising efforts at El Partidazo fan-focused events across the country throughout the 2025/26 La Liga season as well as supporting the Foundation’s community efforts. The El Partidazo watch parties are designed to give American audiences a flavour of Spanish football and make it easier to connect over their favourite La Liga teams. Various La Liga legends, including former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas and Barca’s Ballon d’Or winner Rivaldo, have attended El Partidazo events since its conception in 2023, adding another incentive to a project already bustling with enthusiasm. The deal also detailed that La Liga will serve as a sponsor of the Unity Cup in spring 2026, and will bolster the USSF’s sweeping charitable efforts to grow the game in Europe. “We are on a mission ...

Barcelona make final push for September re-opening of Spotify Camp Nou

Image
FC Barcelona are pressing ahead with plans to reopen the Spotify Camp Nou in time for their La Liga match against Valencia on the weekend of 13-14 September. According to Mundo Deportivo, club executives met on Monday with representatives from the Barcelona City Council as they continue to pursue “Plan A”, which would see them return to their home ground and admit around 27,000 supporters. Barcelona have already obtained the final works certificate for the main stand (Tribuna) and the South Goal (Gol Sur), with approval signed off by surveyors, project managers and construction company Limak. Council members are due to visit the stadium on Tuesday to inspect the works and check requirements for the first occupancy licence, which is needed before fans can attend. A decision is also required soon for the European competition. On Thursday, August 28, the Champions League group-stage draw takes place, and Barcelona must confirm to UEFA which stadium they will use un...

Fans' anger justified after Atletico's poor start to season - Simeone

Image
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone said supporters had every right to feel frustrated with the team after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at home by promoted side Elche in a LaLiga match on Saturday despite taking the lead. Rafa Mir's equaliser cancelled out Alexander Sorloth's early strike as Atletico, who lost at Espanyol last weekend, remained winless in the league and 13th in the standings. Atletico, who finished third in LaLiga last season, also took the lead against Espanyol but were defeated after late strikes from Miguel Rubio and Pere Milla. Asked about the frustrations of fans at the results, Simeone told reporters: "They're right. We're in the same situation as them. "We gave everything to win the game and we couldn't do it. We're working as hard as we can to make the most of the great qualities of the players we have. I am certain that with calm, patience and hard work, we will achieve the results we want. "We can...

Barcelona’s Camp Nou return delayed again

Image
Barcelona have signed an agreement to use the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys until the end of February as uncertainty continues over their return to the Spotify Camp Nou. According to Mundo Deportivo, the deal with Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM) ensures Montjuic will be available for the entire Champions League group phase and a potential play-off if the team finishes between ninth and 24th place. The move follows the City Council’s refusal in late July to grant the Licence of First Occupancy, which prevented the Joan Gamper Trophy from being played at Camp Nou on August 10. President Joan Laporta has reiterated that the club’s priority is to return to Camp Nou, but the contingency plan provides security should the delays continue. The agreement guarantees UEFA requirements are met, with all four home games of the new league phase locked in at the same stadium. Suppliers have also been placed on standby in case Montjuic is needed at short notice. However, ...

La Liga signs innovative deal with Remitly in US and Canada

Image
La Liga have signed a multi-year partnership with Remitly, which will see the Seattle-based online remittance service become the inaugural title sponsor of pickup football events across the US and Canada, beginning this season. The main focus of the deal is to extend Remitly’s branding through La Liga ‘El Partidazo’ events – which are essentially big-budget watch-alongs at various venues spanning North America throughout the season.    The events run in tandem with the biggest La Liga clashes of the season and act as a unique matchday alternative for fans thousands of miles from the action, in an effort to engage with La Liga’s broad North American fanbase without them having to leave their backyard.    The organisation has even pushed for former players to appear at select El Partidazo events, including the likes of Ballon d’Or winner Rivaldo and Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas.    Having signed on the dotted line, Remitly will also gai...

ESPN’s digital gamble on LaLiga is paying off as Spanish plan for Miami regular season debut

Image
La Liga’s fifth season under ESPN’s eight-year, $1.4 billion deal begins with the broadcaster posting its strongest U.S. audience numbers since securing one of Europe’s top leagues.  When the deal was first signed, ESPN was banking on the star power of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, however, no sooner was the ink dry, Messi departed to PSG, ruining their grand opening day plans featuring Barca and Real Sociedad on the main platform, ABC. “That was a real punch in the face to get started,” admits ESPN SVP/Programming Tim Bunnell “We’re relying on the fact that La Liga as a preeminent league is always going to have a roster of top talent,” Bunnell explains, and with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Jude Bellingham plying their trade with the big two, he has no complaints. ESPN’s positioning of La Liga as an ESPN+ property remains unchanged despite last season’s successful El Clásico linear migration. “This is a digitally focused, ESPN+ proposition,” Bunnell states, maintai...
