Simbine’s relentless speed as South African star hits 50 sub-10s milestone

Image
...Kanyinsola Ajayi adds gloss to 2025 sub 10s pool   By Maxwell Kumoye and Mishael Emmanuel     South Africa’s sprint king Akani Simbine has quietly carved out one of the most remarkable records in modern athletics, reaching a landmark half-century of sub-10-second 100m performances. The 32 year old is rewriting the narrative of consistency in elite sprinting. In an era dominated by explosive peaks and fleeting brilliance, Simbine has built his legacy on endurance at the highest level.  From 2015 through 2026, the South African has delivered sub-10-second runs every single season for 12 consecutive years, setting a new benchmark for longevity and surpassing the previous record held by sprint legend Usain Bolt. While Jamaican great Asafa Powell still stands atop the all-time list with an astonishing 97 sub-10 performances between 2004 and 2016, Simbine’s achievement tells a different, equally compelling story, one of resilience, discipline, and unwavering...

CAF set for 2028 Olympic Qualifiers Draw as Nigeria and 34 nations jostle for two tickets

Image
By Maxwell Kumoye      The race for Africa’s spots at the women’s football tournament of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games gathers momentum on Wednesday as the Confederation of African Football conducts the official qualifying draw in Cairo. Scheduled to take place at CAF headquarters, the ceremony will be broadcast live on CAF TV from 15:00 local time (12:00 GMT), setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested campaign across the continent. A total of 35 national teams will enter the qualification series, underscoring the growing strength and depth of women’s football in Africa.  Among the contenders are continental heavyweights like Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon and Ghana, alongside emerging sides eager to make their mark on the Olympic stage. Other nations in the mix include Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guine...

IOC wants to lose U23 restriction of men’s Olympic football and boost number of nations competing

Image
The Olympics would like its men’s football tournament to be “closer” to FIFA’s World Cup, according to International Olympic Committee vice president Juan Antonio Samaranch. Speaking at LaLiga’s headquarters in Madrid, he said that discussions with FIFA were already underway and that they were confident this could happen. “From FIFA’s side, there are many demands regarding women’s and seven-a-side football. We also want the senior men’s competition to resemble the World Cup more closely. Both organisations have their own objectives, but I believe we will make significant progress in achieving them,” said Samaranch. Olympic football, and especially the men’s tournament, generally feels like the poor relation in the Olympic family and at their games. The IOC wants to upgrade the competition as it sees football as a route to raising revenues. Football leads in terms of economic impact and ticket sales. “Football is the biggest sport,” said Samaranch. At LA28 the men’s tourname...

FIFA set to revise 2026 prize pot upwards as nations warn they could lose money playing in the US

Image
FIFA is set to increase prize money and participation payments for the 2026 World Cup, with final figures expected to be signed off by the FIFA Council at its meeting in Vancouver this week ahead of the FIFA Congress on Thursday February 28. FIFA had already announced a record prize pot of $727 million last December, with each of the 48 teams guaranteed at least $10.5 million and the winners set to receive $50 million. How much that figure will now rise to has yet to be confirmed, but to put the prize money into context, the 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in the US last summer had prize money of $1 billion. The move to increase this summer’s prize money follows pressure from a number of national associations concerned that the cost of competing – particularly in the United States – could outweigh the financial returns, even for teams progressing deep into the tournament. Travel, accommodation and operational expenses, combined with a complex tax environment across host cities,...

Al Ahli Saudi retain AFC Champions League Elite title in Jeddah

Image
Al Ahli Saudi beat Japan’s FC Machida Zelvia 1-0 to retain their AFC Champions League Elite title at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah with a goal scored by substitute Feras Al Brikan six minutes into extra time. Al Ahli are only the second team to win consecutive AFC Champions League titles and they did so in front of a 58,984 crowd in their home city. But it wasn’t plain sailing for the Saudis who had Zakaria Hawsawi sent off in the 68th minute with the score at 0-0. Both teams were unchanged from their quarter finals and it was Al Ahli who dominated the game early on. Roger Ibanez fired from distance with 90 seconds on the clock while moments later Galeno had an attempt that missed the goal. Galeno had a shot well saved again later in the half, while Merih Demiral hit the top of the crossbar just before the break. Machida had once again been set up to defend and the second half began with more Al Ahli pressure. Ivan Toney was just wide in the 66...

Saudi Arabia appoint Greek Georgios Donis to lead nation at 2026 finals

Image
With their head coach role vacant, Saudi Arabia have turned to familiarity ahead of the World Cup this summer, appointing Georgios Donis as head coach following the dismissal of Hervé Renard. The change, confirmed on Thursday, comes less than two months before the tournament, leaving Donis with limited time to impose any significant tactical shift. Donis arrives from Saudi side Al Khaleej and is well-versed in the Saudi Pro League, having previously managed Al Hilal and a number of other domestic sides over the past decade. That familiarity is central to the decision – given Donis’s lack of experience against World Cup level opposition. In confirming the appointment, the Saudi Arabian FA said: “He has extensive experience in the league, including his most recent post [which] enhances his ability to adapt quickly.” With a short runway before the World Cup, that ability to “adapt quickly” is likely to have taken precedence over longer-term planning. That plaaning will be led ...

Plovdiv clubs unite to demand rent freeze

Image
In an unprecedented show of unity, Plovdiv’s two major football rivals, PFC Botev and PFC Lokomotiv, have submitted a joint proposal to the Mayor and the Municipal Council demanding long-term, rent-free use of their respective stadiums.  The move comes as a direct response to recent discussions within the local government regarding a potential increase in stadium rents—a step both clubs describe as “unacceptable” and a “blow” to the sport. The leadership of both clubs is calling for a formal agreement to grant them free use of their stadiums for a period of at least 20 years. They argue that while the state provided the initial funding for construction and completion, the clubs have been left to shoulder the heavy financial burden of maintenance, operation, and utility costs. In a strongly worded letter, the clubs outlined several reasons why the municipality should pivot from a “landlord” relationship to a “partnership” model. The clubs claim they are operating in an “...

Coca-Cola links up with Cole Palmer to front World Cup campaign

Image
Coca-Cola has added Cole Palmer to its football roster, with the Chelsea and England midfielder set to front a series of campaigns leading into the 2026 World Cup. The deal places Palmer at the centre of Coca-Cola’s summer activation cycle, spanning both its Premier League rights and its long-standing association with the FIFA World Cup. As the brand’s ambassador, he will feature across Coca-Cola and Powerade campaigns aimed at connecting with younger audiences, a demographic the company continues to target heavily through football. Palmer has emerged as a marketable figure despite a relatively quiet season on the pitch – nine league goals and one assist across 22 appearances, with injuries limiting his rhythm. Even so, he is expected to be part of England’s travelling squad to North America this summer, albeit not as a guaranteed starter in a side that will likely feature Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka in his favoured positions. The campaign itself leans into Palmer’s off...

FIFA struggling to sell tickets for USMNT World Cup opener

Image
FIFA are struggling to sell tickets for the USMNT’s opening World Cup match against Paraguay on June 12 in a potentially humiliating blow to its dynamic pricing strategy.  The co-hosts are due to take on their south American neighbours on home soil at the 69,650-capacity SoFi Stadium.  But a document distributed to Los Angeles organisers on April 10 listed just 40,934 tickets purchased for the match.  The document doesn’t break out hospitality or held-back inventory, and FIFA declined to clarify when asked. But even allowing for the unknowns, the picture is not flattering.  FIFA priced the opener as the third-most expensive match of the entire tournament when tickets first dropped last October. Only the final and one semi-final cost more. Category 1 and Category 2 seats at $2,730 and $1,940 are still available. Thousands have been listed on FIFA’s ticketing platform since the “Last-Minute Sales Phase” launched on April 1.  US Soccer supporter groups ...

Mamdani takes action over ticket prices

Image
Zohran Mamdani is doing something for football that nobody else in American politics is doing. He’s defending the fans.  The New York City Mayor announced on Sunday that his administration and Gotham FC were releasing 1,000 tickets priced at $5 for the club’s May 9 match against Boston Legacy at Sports Illustrated Stadium. The tickets sold out in under an hour. Standard prices for the same match start at $22.  “We’re teaming up with the nation’s two-time champions to make soccer more affordable for everyone,” Mamdani told his 11.7 million followers across Instagram and Twitter. “This is the summer of soccer. Grab your tickets. I’ll see you there.”  A lifelong Arsenal fan who grew up playing the game, Mamdani has previously called on FIFA to abandon dynamic pricing for the men’s World Cup, cap resale prices, and reserve 15 per cent of tickets for residents at a discount.  He said: “As a lifelong soccer fan, I have grown up with memories of the World Cup, w...

World Cup a “bonanza for sportswashing” says Human Rights Watch

Image
Human Rights Watch has warned of “fear” and “authoritarianism” at this summer’s World Cup.   Following Russia and Qatar, the finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada were seen as a safe haven, but the policies of US President Donald Trump have promoted widespread criticism and reshaped America’s global reputation – and on Monday Human Rights Watch, in a press briefing, cautioned that the tournament could be “a bonanza of sportswashing.   “This was supposed to be the first ever World Cup with a human rights framework: key protections for workers, fans, players and communities,” said Mindy Worden of Human Rights Watch.  “Instead, the US administration’s brutal immigration crackdown, discriminatory policies and threats to press freedom mean the tournament risks being defined by exclusion and fear. I think we are here to say that the problem of sportswashing is alive and well and this World Cup will be a bonanza for sportswashing.  “In the Un...

Norwegian FA chief Lise Klaveness wants FIFA Peace Prize abolished

Image
Norway’s Lise Klaveness has called for the FIFA Peace Prize to be abolished. Last December, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino awarded the maiden edition of the trophy to US President Donald Trump at the draw for the World Cup in Washington DC, prompting criticism.   Privately, lots of football officials slammed Infantino but Klaveness, the chair of the Norwegian FA, went on record Monday to demand the FIFA Peace Prize should not have a second edition.  “We (the NFF) want to see it abolished,” said Klaveness in a media call with the international press. “We don’t think it’s part of FIFA’s mandate to give such a prize, we think we have a Nobel Institute that does that job independently already.  “We think it’s important for football federations, confederations and also FIFA to ‌try to avoid situations where this arm’s-length distance to state leaders is challenged, and these prizes will typically be very political if you don’t have real good instruments and experi...

Inter Miami sign up with Shift4

Image
Inter Miami have signed a new partnership with Shift4, handing the payments specialist a central role in matchday operations at the club’s recently opened Nu Stadium.  Under the agreement, Shift4 becomes both an Official Partner of the MLS side and the Official Payment Processing Partner of the 26,700-seat venue, with its integrated technology now underpinning ticketing and in-stadium purchases. Nu Stadium, which opened just over three weeks ago, represents a significant infrastructure step for Inter Miami as it looks to align its commercial and matchday offering with its ever-growing on-pitch profile. The club says that embedding a single payments ecosystem across the venue is intended to streamline operations while supporting increased throughput on busy matchdays. In its press release, the deal was positioned squarely around the fan journey, with an emphasis on reducing friction across high-volume touchpoints such as entry and concessions.  There was no mention ...

CAF raises prize money for club competitions

Image
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant upgrade to its prize money pot across its men’s club competitions, with the winners of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League now set to receive $6 million and the CAF Confederation Cup champions $4 million.  The revised figures, confirmed by President Patrice Motsepe on Monday, represent a 50% rise at the top end of the Champions League – up from $4 million – and a doubling of the Confederation Cup winners’ purse from $2 million.  The CAF were keen to focus on the upward financial trend since Motsepe’s election in 2021, when Champions League winners earned $2.5 million, meaning the top prize has risen by around 140% over that period. Growth in the Confederation Cup has been steeper still, climbing from $1.25 million in 2021 to $4 million this season.  CAF’s financial adjustments will also apply to payments to clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds, which have been doubled to $100,000 for 20...

PSG and Bayern prepare for clash of titans

Image
Bayern Munich face Paris Saint-Germain tonight in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final in Paris.  It’s a heavyweight clash between Europe’s two best teams – a game that feels it may have come a round too early. The tie revisits the 2019/20 final, when Bayern edged PSG 1-0 through Kingsley Coman. This time, however, PSG arrive as holders after dismantling Inter Milan 5-0 in last year’s showpiece.  Despite that, Bayern come in as marginal favourites, largely on the back of their attacking depth and consistency. Vincent Kompany’s side are used to seeing off teams of PSG’s stature, having beaten Real Madrid 6-4 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, while PSG have arguably had the more emphatic run – dispatching Liverpool 4-0 and Chelsea 8-2 across the knockout rounds.  There are, however, selection questions on both sides. Bayern travel with a growing injury list – Serge Gnabry, Raphaël Guerreiro, Lennart Karl and Thomas Bischof are all sidelined ...

Budweiser showcases Erling Haaland and Jürgen Klopp in World Cup campaign

Image
Budweiser has marked four decades of association with the FIFA World Cup with the launch of its latest global campaign, fronted by Erling Haaland and Jürgen Klopp. The “Let It Pour” campaign, created by Grey Global, lands ahead of a World Cup cycle in which Budweiser remains the official beer partner, extending one of the longest-running commercial relationships in the game. Budweiser say the campaign is built around the emotional release that accompanies the tournament, combining a flagship film with a wider programme of fan activations, watch parties and merchandise. Monica Mody, Global Vice-President for Budweiser, said: “People wait years for the FIFA World Cup. When it happens, for 39 days, the entire world comes together to celebrate. ‘Let It Pour’ invites fans of legal drinking age to release that passion and let their memories, emotions, and Budweiser pour.” The choice of talent reflects both present and past. Haaland, approaching his first World Cup, is positioned ...

FIFA faces cost, logistics and political hurdles ahead of historic 2026 World Cup

Image
By Maxwell Kumoye        The spotlight turns to FIFA this Thursday as its member associations gather in Vancouver for a congress that feels anything but routine, with the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup now under two months. Set to be the biggest tournament in football history, the 48-team showpiece will span the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. But behind the excitement, key issues remain unresolved. Cost has emerged as a major concern. The vast travel distances, varying tax systems and heavy logistics across North America have raised fears, particularly among European teams, with UEFA warning that nations may struggle financially unless they progress deep into the tournament. FIFA is expected to counter by highlighting record commercial strength, with plans to increase prize money and participation fees, arguing the expanded format will drive more global investment and development. Politics, however, could prove trickier. I...

Petrojet halt APR’s perfect run as Nigeria Customs reaches last 16 at African Club Championship

Image
By Maxwell Kumoye      Rwanda’s APR VC saw their unbeaten streak come to an end after a commanding straight-sets defeat to Egypt’s Petrojet Volleyball Club in their final Group A clash at the Africa Men’s Club Volleyball Championship on Monday. Playing at the BK Arena, APR fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 29-27) in a match that ultimately decided top spot in the group.  Despite the setback, APR still advanced to the knockout stage alongside fellow qualifiers, including Nigeria’s Nigeria Customs Service Volleyball Club, who secured a place in the Round of 16. APR began brightly, showing early intent in a high-stakes opener, but defensive lapses and shaky reception quickly handed control to Petrojet, who cruised to a 25-18 win in the first set. Head coach Sammy Mulinge attempted to shake things up in the second set, introducing Samuel Niyonshima for James Achuil, while Willy Mucyo switched to the right side alongside Yves Mutabazi.  The tactical tweaks, however...

Speaking before the team’s departure, NSC boss Honourable Olopade urged the athletes to compete with discipline, unity, and unwavering determination, describing the championship as a vital opportunity for Nigeria to reaffirm its status in international athletics. “The entire nation stands firmly behind you. We have absolute faith in your ability to deliver and make Nigeria proud,” he declared. In a show of commitment, Olopade revealed he will be present in Gaborone to personally support the team, an indication of the Federal Government’s renewed drive to elevate Nigerian sports on the world stage.  Beyond podium finishes, he charged the athletes to target qualification slots for future global competitions t...
