Basketball boss defends Nasarawa hoops body, slams ‘fake news’ storm

Image
...Defends Nasarawa hoops body By Mishael Emmanuel        The Chairman of the Nasarawa State Basketball Association (NSBBA), Mr. Ayuba Tijani, has fired back at what he called a “toxic campaign of misinformation” targeting the state’s basketball body, warning that the false claims risk damaging the image of Nasarawa sports. Tijani was reacting to circulated social media reports alleging that organisers of a basketball tournament were denied access to the Lafia Indoor Sports Hall. The reports, credited to Bek Jang and journalist Afiemo Obaro, also dragged the NSBBA and former NBBF board member, Adamu Deshi, through the mud with what Tijani described as “unprintable accusations.” According to Tijani, the claims collapse under basic scrutiny. “First, Mr. Deshi does not reside in Lafia and has absolutely no control over the Indoor Sports Hall,” he said.  “Accusing him of blocking access to a facility he does not manage is disingenuous and misleading.” Ti...

Sports Bill 2026 proposes National Sports Authority to strengthen governance in Kenya

Image
By FIRST ZEALMEDIACAST BLOG    Kenya’s sports sector could be set for a major regulatory overhaul following the unveiling of the Sports Bill 2026, which proposes the establishment of a National Sports Regulatory Authority (NSRA) to enhance governance, compliance and integrity across all sporting disciplines. The draft Bill was presented to Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya by a taskforce appointed in November 2024 by then Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen.  The taskforce was mandated to review the country’s sports policy, legal and institutional framework to ensure it aligns with the realities of modern sport. Chaired by Senior Counsel John Ohaga, the taskforce underscored the urgency of reform, noting that Kenya’s existing legal framework has struggled to keep pace with the evolving demands of professional and grassroots sports. Under the proposed law, the NSRA will be responsible for registering sports organisations, licensing sports education institutions an...

Image
By Mishael Emmanuel    The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has set plans in motion to strengthen the Black Stars’ technical team as preparations gather momentum for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to kick off in June across Canada, Mexico and the United States. Communication Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum, disclosed that discussions are already ongoing to bring in additional technical personnel to support head coach Otto Addo and his crew.  The move follows recommendations made by Addo shortly after Ghana sealed qualification for the global showpiece. “There are also plans to strengthen the technical team, which is very known, is one of the recommendations that the coach made immediately after our qualification, and that discussion is also ongoing,” Asante Twum said in an interview with Luv FM. According to the GFA spokesperson, official announcements on new additions to the Black Stars’ backroom staff will be made in the coming weeks as part of a ...

Image
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has confirmed the Copper Queens participation at the 2026 COSAFA Championship that will take place from February 18 to March 1 in Polokwane, South Africa. Head of Media and Communications Nkweto Tembwe confirms that FAZ has written to COSAFA confirming the team’s participation at this year’s tournament. Tembwe however dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that Copper Queens coach Nora Häuptle will skip the 2026 COSAFA Women’s Championship. He said in light of the FIFA window engagement for the Copper Queens in the United Arab Emirates, coach Nora Hauptle will use the core of the Copper Queens for the high level engagement while an assemblage of local players will participate in the Cosafa under a different trainer. He clarified that during her interaction with journalists at the Met Sports Centre in Lusaka, Coach Häuptle did not rule out COSAFA participation.  Tembwe said coach only indicate...

The decision marks a return to Rwanda’s capital, which successfully hosted the second edition of the SportsBiz Africa Forum in September last year. Man United's Dorgu faces weeks on the sidelines after injury at Arsenal – Carrick

Image
Patrick Dorgu, who was injured after scoring Manchester United's second goal in last weekend's 3-2 Premier League win at Arsenal, may be sidelined for a few weeks or more, United manager Michael Carrick said on Friday.   Media reports said the 21-year-old picked up a hamstring injury that forced him off the field in the 81st minute, half an hour after his left-footed volley put the visitors 2-1 ahead.   Denmark international Dorgu, who joined United in the summer, also scored in the win over Manchester City earlier this month.   "Pat is going to be out for a period of time. We're still working through how long that's going to be," Carrick told reporters.   "He's had such a good couple of weeks and we weren't sure if it was cramp or something more serious, but it looks more serious. Whether it's a few weeks or more, we're going to have to wait and see. Unfortunately, it's something you have to work through in football....

Arteta shrugs off title pressure ahead of Arsenal's trip to stubborn Leeds

Image
Mikel Arteta is keen not to let Arsenal's three-match winless streak in the Premier League affect the players, calling for his team to stay grounded as they pursue their first English top-flight title since 2003-04.   Sunday's home loss to Manchester United shaved Arsenal's lead at the top to four points over Manchester City and Aston Villa. But Arteta said that Arsenal should focus on the overall picture of their season so far.   "It's about understanding where you are," Arteta told reporters on Friday, a day before their trip to Leeds United.   "Certainly when you lose a game you have a lot of feelings, especially this group of players because they are so competitive. They search for excellence and when you don't reach it, you ask questions, and we did that.   "My role there is to bring optimism and reality of where we are. Our club has a long, long history and to find the position we are in February, it's hard to find....

Slot says Liverpool must avoid late errors ahead of Newcastle visit

Image
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said his side cannot afford any more late lapses as they prepare to host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, saying every point is vital in their push for a top-four finish.   The Merseyside club conceded a goal in injury time against Bournemouth to lose 3-2 last Saturday, slipping to sixth in the league table with 36 points.   But while the 6-0 Champions League win against Qarabag on Wednesday has lifted spirits, Slot remained cautious about the team's consistency heading into the crucial stage of the season.   "We are fully aware of the fact that one win is never enough at this club and the next one (game) is coming fast against Newcastle," Slot told reporters on Friday.   "I am 100% sure that that game is a bigger challenge than the one that we faced on Wednesday. Every single game is crucial, but the position we are in now makes every game even more crucial, because we want to achieve top four....

US treating friendlies like World Cup matches as tournament nears - Pochettino

Image
The United States will treat their upcoming friendlies like World Cup matches, coach Mauricio Pochettino said on Thursday, aiming to set the right tone before playing in front of home fans at the four-yearly tournament.   The United States, who are co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico in June and July, play Belgium and Portugal in a pair of March friendlies in Atlanta, before facing Senegal in Charlotte, North Carolina, in May and Germany in a Chicago "send-off match" in June.   "The idea is that the World Cup will start in March when we are all together because it's time to show - like we were showing in the last camp in November or October - our identity, our way to play and the way that we want to perform in the World Cup," Pochettino told reporters.   The United States came up short in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final last summer but ended the year with a handful of solid performances, winning their final three friendlies of 2025 agains...

He will occupy an international roster spot.   ...

Americans expected to bet $1.76 billion on Super Bowl – AGA

Image
A record $1.76 billion will be legally wagered in the United States on next week's Super Bowl match-up between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, the American Gaming Association said on Friday.   The trade group representing the U.S. casino industry said the figure, a nearly 27% year-over-year increase, reflects the continued growth and strength of the legal, state- and tribal-regulated sports betting market.   “No single event brings fans together like the Super Bowl, and this record figure shows just how much Americans enjoy sports betting as part of the experience,” AGA President and CEO Bill Miller said in a news release.   “By choosing legal, regulated sportsbooks, fans are having fun while supporting a safe and responsible market.”   In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on sports betting. Since the ruling, 38 states and the District of Columbia have now legalized sports betting in some form.   Earl...

Uhlaender files CAS appeal in last hope for Olympic skeleton spot

Image
U.S. skeleton racer Katie Uhlaender has asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to review Canada's decision to withdraw four athletes from an event earlier this month that ended her Winter Olympics qualifying hopes, CAS said on Friday.   Due to the Canadian withdrawals from the races in Lake Placid, the field dropped to a size that reduced the number of ranking points available, ending two-time world champion Uhlaender's qualification chances for the Milano Cortina Olympics in Italy, starting on February 6.   While the Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton (BCS) federation was cleared of any wrongdoing two weeks ago by the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) after an investigation, Uhlaender is hoping CAS will rule in her favour in a last-gasp attempt to make the Olympics.   "Ms Uhlaender requests that CAS determine whether a decision by BCS to withdraw four of its athletes from the 11 January 2026 IBSF North American Cup Race was...

History awaits as Djokovic and Alcaraz meet in Australian Open final

Image
...Djokovic aiming for sole ownership of Grand Slam title record ..Serb would become oldest winner of a major title with victory over Alcaraz ...Spain's Alcaraz bidding to become youngest men's player to win all four majors   Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz meet in Sunday's Australian Open final with history in the balance, as the Serbian great chases a record 25th Grand Slam title and the Spanish dynamo bids to become the youngest man to win all four majors. Modern men's tennis has not lacked for champions pushing for the next frontier of greatness but the stakes have rarely been higher in a single match.   With 24 major trophies and a record 10 at Melbourne Park, Djokovic's legacy is already secure.   Few can argue there have been better players to grace the men's game.   And yet Djokovic's record remains bracketed with Australian icon Margaret Court, who also won 24 titles in the women's game, including 13 in the amateur era.   Wit...

Harrison and Skupski win Australian Open doubles title in first major together

Image
Sixth seeds Neal Skupski and Christian Harrison defeated Australia's wildcard pairing of Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans 7-6(4) 6-4 to capture the Australian Open men's doubles title on Saturday in their first Grand Slam event as a team.   The British-American duo's victory at Rod Laver Arena gave Harrison his first Grand Slam title and marked Skupski's fourth in doubles and mixed doubles, though his first outside Wimbledon.   The partnership is remarkably fresh, as the pair started playing together only two weeks ago in Adelaide after training for a week together in Baton Rouge in December.   ★ SKUPSKI SILENCES RAUCOUS HOME FANS   "We obviously started playing together in Adelaide two weeks ago now," Skupski said.   "We didn't know obviously how it would go. It seems to be going pretty well so far!"   With the roof closed at Rod Laver Arena due to the rain, the match began at a fast pace under the lights and proved to be an enterta...

Mertens and Zhang win Australian Open women's doubles crown

Image
Fourth seeds Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai won the Australian Open women's doubles title on Saturday with a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory over Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic, claiming their first Grand Slam trophy as a duo.   The victory handed Mertens her sixth Grand Slam title while Zhang won her third but the triumph almost never happened, with the Belgian-Chinese pair forced to save three match points in the second round against teenagers Iva Jovic and Victoria Mboko.   "It's been quite a week so far," said Mertens, who is set to move up to world number one in the doubles rankings.   "I'm lost for words. In the second round of doubles, we had three match points against us. We kept on fighting, we kept on believing and we really grew as a team. Today, in the final, I'm happy that I served it out eventually.   "It's the first week that we've actually played together and what a result. It's been amazing." Danilina and Krun...

Nigeria's Golden Arrows bite the dust as Egypt reassert supremacy, Angola, Cape Verde rise

Image
By FIRST ZEALMEDIACAST BLOG      Nigeria’s quest for continental glory at the African Handball Championship ended in disappointment, as a campaign filled with promise ultimately unravelled at the business end of the tournament.  The Golden Arrows arrived with high hopes of making a deep run, but inconsistency, missed chances and a growing competitive field conspired to halt their mission earlier than expected. The turning point came in a painful defeat that exposed familiar issues for Nigeria, lapses in concentration, struggles against well-drilled defences and an inability to close out tight moments.  For a nation with raw talent and athleticism in abundance, the setback highlighted the gap that still exists between potential and sustained elite performance on the continental stage.  It was another reminder that progress in African handball now demands more than passion; it requires structure, depth and long-term investment. While Nigeria stumb...

Black Stars Boss steps up World Cup preparations, holds crucial talks with Partey

Image
By Mishael Emmanuel        Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has intensified Ghana’s build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding positive talks with deputy captain Thomas Partey in Spain on Wednesday. The meeting took place just hours before Villarreal’s UEFA Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen and is understood to have been part of Addo’s ongoing tour of Europe to engage Ghanaian players ahead of the global showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Sources close to the discussions described the talks as positive, with Addo underlining the need for top physical condition, discipline and sustained focus as Ghana begin the long road towards World Cup qualification and competitiveness on the world stage. Addo’s engagement with Partey reflects a wider strategy aimed at fostering unity, leadership and a shared sense of purpose within the Black Stars camp. In recent weeks, the Ghana coach has also held similar meetings with key squad m...

Wydad starman Ziyech sidelined, ahead of Confederations Cup showdown with Maniema

Image
By Mishael Emmanuel       Wydad AC will make the trip to DR Congo for their Caf Confederation Cup group stage encounter against AS Maniema without star man Hakim Ziyech, after the Moroccan club decided to leave the playmaker out of the travelling squad as a precaution. The decision, confirmed on the eve of the fixture, is understood to be linked to concerns over the playing surface at TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi.  With sunny and dry conditions expected on matchday, Wydad’s technical crew were reluctant to risk Ziyech on a pitch they fear may not be in ideal condition. Ziyech, one of the biggest names in African football and a key creative outlet for the Red Castle, has been carefully managed since his return, and the club appears keen to avoid any unnecessary setbacks at this stage of the competition. Sources close to the team suggest the exclusion is not injury-related, but purely a preventative measure. Wydad will now rely on their depth and e...

French middle-distance runner Fleury handed six-month ban for betting offence

Image
...German athletes Henrik Janssen and Steven Richter get three-month ban By Mishael Emmanuel      French middle-distance runner Aurore Fleury has been suspended for six months by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after breaching anti-betting regulations, the watchdog confirmed.  Fleury was also fined $3,500, an amount the AIU said will be donated to charity. In its ruling, the AIU reiterated that betting rules strictly prohibit all “applicable persons” from placing bets on any athletics event, regardless of level or location.  The regulations are designed to protect the integrity of the sport and prevent conflicts of interest that could undermine fair competition. Fleury’s sanction was the most severe among a trio of recent betting-related cases announced by the AIU.  German athletes Henrik Janssen and Steven Richter were each handed three-month suspensions after being found guilty of similar violations of the betting rules. The AIU stressed th...

CAF drops the hammer after AFCON final chaos

Image
By Mishael Emmanuel      The fallout from the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final has been swift and severe, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) slamming Senegal and Morocco with heavy suspensions and eye-watering fines over disciplinary breaches that marred the showpiece match. Senegal bore the brunt of CAF’s wrath. Head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw was hit with a five-match suspension and a $100,000 fine after CAF ruled his conduct brought the game into disrepute.  On the pitch, Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each handed two-match bans for unsporting behaviour towards the referee, compounding a bruising post-final reckoning for the Teranga Lions. The punishment didn’t stop there. CAF fined the Senegalese Football Federation a staggering $615,000, citing supporter misconduct, repeated unsporting behaviour by players and officials, and a flood of yellow cards during the final that tipped the match into disciplinary chaos. Hos...

Two-time MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo bracing for Bucks exit

Image
Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is preparing to say farewell to Milwaukee as the Feb. 5 trade deadline nears, ESPN reported Wednesday.   Multiple teams have made "aggressive offers" for the two-time league MVP and the Bucks are starting to listen, according to the report.   League sources confirmed to ESPN that Antetokounmpo, 31, has been telling the team for months that the moment has come to part ways after 12-plus seasons.   Milwaukee dropped to 18-27 with a 139-122 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday night and is on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 season.   Antetokounmpo, who is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks with a right calf strain he sustained last Friday, is averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 30 starts this season.   A nine-time All-Star who led the Bucks to their first NBA championship in 50 years in 2021, is the franchise's all-time leader in games (889), poi...

Exiled Sterling leaves Chelsea by mutual agreement

Image
England winger Raheem Sterling has left Chelsea by mutual agreement, the Premier League club said on Wednesday, after the 31-year-old was frozen out of the squad before and after a loan move at Arsenal last season.   Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City - where he won four Premier League titles - in a deal worth 50 million pounds ($69 million) in July 2022 on a five-year contract, but the move turned sour with the arrival of Enzo Maresca as manager in 2024.   Maresca made it clear that Sterling was not the type of winger he was looking for, and the player trained apart from the first team before joining Arsenal on loan. Sterling returned to Chelsea having failed to impress Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. Sterling was again exiled from the senior squad, and while new manager Liam Rosenior said he would speak with him, the situation remained unchanged. "We thank Raheem for the contribution he made while a Chelsea player and wish him well for t...

Image
By Trust Ittai      Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has boldly declared Ghana’s readiness to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, expressing strong belief in his team ahead of a demanding qualification campaign. Ghana will battle for a ticket to the global showpiece via the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will be hosted in Morocco later this year. Drawn in Group D, the Black Queens will face stern opposition from Cameroon, Cape Verde and Mali in the race for progression. Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, with the semifinalists at WAFCON earning automatic qualification to the Women’s World Cup, set to be staged in Brazil. Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV, the Swedish tactician left no room for doubt about his ambition, insisting qualification is a realistic target for Ghana. “Yes, we will qualify for the World Cup,” Björkegren said. “If you don’t believe that you will ma...

Hauptle outlines pathway for diaspora players into Copper Queens

Image
By Aaron Mubanga       Zambia coach says overseas-based players must show commitment and outperform local talent to earn national team call ups.  Copper Queens head coach Norah Hauptle says Zambia have widened their scouting net to include players in the diaspora, but insists overseas-based footballers must meet strict criteria before earning a place in the national team. Speaking to the FAZ Media team, Hauptle said players with Zambian roots based abroad are welcome to represent the Copper Queens, provided they show commitment to the national cause and are able to improve the squad. The Swiss coach has already demonstrated her openness to diaspora talent by handing a call-up to France-based striker Samiah Phiri, and says more could follow. “We basically say ‘Zambia Ku Calo’. All players in the diaspora with Zambian roots are welcome to our national team,” Hauptle said. “We have extended the scouting to the US and Europe. Currently, we have some on o...

Liverpool crisis deepens, as poor run continues

Image
Bournemouth's last gap winner, on Saturday is the latest dent to comes the way of Arne's Slot's deflated Liverpool side, condemning the Reds to seventh Premier League defeat of the season, leaving the reigning champions still searching for their first league win of 2026. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said he thought he had been fouled in the build-up to Bournemouth's winner, which came after a chaotic scramble following a long throw, but in the end his side capitulated again despite dominating for much of the second half. "Losing never feels good, especially as a Liverpool player, and in the season we're trying to find consistency," the Dutch defender told Sky Sports. Goals from Evanilson and Alejandro Jimenez set the pace for a composed Bournemouth lineup early in the first half, with the visitors managing to pull one back before the break through Van Dijk. Dominik Szoboszlai seems to have scrapped out a fifth draw in a row in the league f...

Morocco’s silence, Senegal’s anger and the politics poisoning football

Image
By Maxwell Kumoye         The final whistle of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was supposed to mark the end of a tournament. Instead, it has opened a new front, one where football, politics and wounded pride are colliding in ugly fashion. Senegal are champions of Africa. But in Morocco, the loss to the Teranga Lions has sparked a chain of actions that many see as unsporting, provocative and deeply troubling for the image of the game. Nearly every Senegalese player who lifted the AFCON trophy received public congratulations from their clubs. Nearly every one—except Mamadou Lamine Camara. Camara, a Senegal international who plays his club football with RS Berkane in Morocco, was met with silence. No message. No tribute. No acknowledgement of a historic achievement.  In modern football, where clubs rush to bask in their players’ international success, the omission screamed louder than words. CAF NOTICED The continental body stepped in, publicly cele...

Over 700,000 people were affected by the severe flooding in the Southern African nation. Mozambique occupies a place of pride in Oyedeji's heart. He notes with nostalgia that he captained the D'Tigers to win the Gold Medal at the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, in 2011.  Mozambique still remains one of the top countries in African Basketball. Its National Teams remain in the top echelon of b...
