Nnamdi Puts ₦550,000 on the Line for Men’s Javelin at Athletic Heat Meet
Nigerian national record holder and Olympian Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi has pledged ₦550,000 in prize money for the men’s javelin throw at the Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet, reinforcing efforts to reward excellence and support the development of athletics in Nigeria.
The competition is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, with the sponsorship covering the top eight finishers in the men’s javelin event.
Nnamdi, one of Nigeria’s leading javelin throwers, has established himself on the international stage through a series of notable performances, winning medals at major championships and setting a new national benchmark in the discipline.
He won bronze at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, becoming the first Nigerian athlete to win a field event medal at the championships since Esther Aghatise in 2002.
He followed that achievement with gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra, Ghana, and silver at the 2024 African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, before representing Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
On April 17, 2026, Nnamdi further strengthened his place in Nigerian athletics history by setting a national record of 84.68 metres at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida, United States.
His collegiate career has also been marked by significant success. Competing for the Baylor Bears, he won three Big 12 Outdoor Javelin titles between 2022 and 2024 before transferring to the Texas A&M Aggies, where he captured the 2026 SEC Outdoor Javelin title.
Under the sponsorship arrangement, the winner of the men’s javelin event will receive ₦200,000, while the second-place finisher will earn ₦100,000 and the bronze medallist ₦75,000.
The fourth-place athlete will take home ₦50,000, with ₦40,000 allocated to fifth place, ₦35,000 to sixth, ₦30,000 to seventh and ₦20,000 to eighth.
The ₦550,000 prize pool ensures that financial rewards will extend beyond the medal positions, providing incentives for athletes across the field.
Athletic Heat Chief Executive Officer, Eseroghene Oguma, expressed appreciation to Nnamdi for supporting the competition, noting that contributions from athletes and sports personalities play an important role in rewarding excellence and inspiring emerging talents.
Nnamdi’s pledge also underscores the value of athletes contributing to the development of their sport at home, drawing on their experience at the highest level to create opportunities for others.
The Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet will bring together athletes for a celebration of the competition’s 10-year journey, while continuing its efforts to promote athletics and encourage emerging talents in Nigeria.
