Dr Mustapha Abdullahi has emerged as the new President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), securing a four-year mandate at Thursday’s elective congress in Abuja amid controversy over the conduct of the electoral process.

Abdullahi polled 40 votes to emerge unopposed in a poorly conducted polls by Dr Lanre Glover led Electoral Committee.

The outcome of the election has been overshadowed by allegations of constitutional violations, procedural irregularities and concerns over the credibility of the electoral process.

In a major development, all the other presidential candidates reportedly withdrew from the process, citing what they described as an abnormal electoral procedure, multiple violations of the NBBF Constitution and other irregularities.

The withdrawals have raised further questions about the legitimacy of the exercise, with the aggrieved stakeholders challenging the process and insisting that the federation’s electoral guidelines and constitutional provisions must be respected.

The controversy is already before the courts, as the electoral process is being challenged through legal channels. Mm

Further legal battles are also being contemplated, suggesting that Thursday’s outcome may not bring an immediate end to the crisis surrounding the federation’s leadership.

The dispute comes at a critical time for Nigerian basketball, with the federation expected to provide stable leadership, strengthen domestic competitions, improve player development and reposition the national teams for international success.

While Abdullahi has emerged from the congress with the highest number of votes, the unresolved questions surrounding the election could present significant challenges for the incoming administration.

Attention will now turn to the courts and the relevant authorities to determine the next steps in the dispute, even as the Nigerian basketball community awaits clarity on the legitimacy of the electoral process and the future direction of the federation.
