Former Olympic and world champion Daniel Igali has thrown his weight behind Team Nigeria’s campaign at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships, visiting the national team’s camp as the competition enters its decisive phase.

Igali, now Commissioner for Sports in oil rich coastal State of Bayelsa and immediate past President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), met with the coaching crew to offer encouragement as Nigeria seeks to end its three-year absence from the medal podium at the global showpiece.

The challenge for Nigeria is vivid translate its strength on the African continent into medals against the world's leading wrestling nations. With the championships reaching a critical point, the team will be eager to make its remaining opportunities count.

A former Olympic champion and Bureau Member of United World Wrestling (UWW), Igali understands what it takes to compete and win at the highest level. His presence at the camp offered an opportunity to draw on that experience while reinforcing the importance of belief and determination in the team's pursuit of success.

The visit also brought together key figures in the federation's leadership. NWF Vice President Christopher Yaba Amkpila and the federation's Secretary-General were present as Igali engaged with the technical crew.

As the competition progresses, attention will turn to whether the Nigerian wrestlers can convert the encouragement and preparations into a long-awaited podium finish.

A team eager to reassert itself among the world's best, the closing stages present an opportunity to turn that ambition into tangible success.
