Retired Col. Sam Ahmedu’s decades of service in international basketball administration have received fresh recognition following confirmation by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) that there are no regulatory impediments to his serving on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board.

In a letter dated October 19, 2026, addressed to NBBF President, Dr Abdullahi Mustapha, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis confirmed that Ahmedu has been a member of FIBA bodies since 1997, making him the most senior Nigerian in the international basketball governing structure, according to the letter.

The letter provides a significant reference point in the ongoing conversation about Ahmedu’s place in the administration of Nigerian basketball, particularly as the newly elected NBBF Board begins its 2026–2030 tenure.

FIBA also stated that there were no impediments under its regulatory framework to Ahmedu’s service on the NBBF Board.

The confirmation comes at a significant time for Nigerian basketball, following the NBBF elective congress held on October 15, which produced a new board for the 2026–2030 term.

Ahmedu, who serves as President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, has remained a prominent figure in basketball administration, with decades of experience within the international game.

His longevity and institutional knowledge are valuable assets that could contribute to strengthening the administration, development and international representation of Nigerian basketball.

FIBA’s letter congratulated Mustapha and the newly elected board members, while welcoming the federation’s stated commitment to good governance and elections conducted in accordance with its constitution and applicable FIBA regulations.

The international body also acknowledged the work of the outgoing NBBF board under the leadership of Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida.

With Ahmedu’s eligibility now expressly confirmed by FIBA, attention turns to how his experience and standing within the international basketball community can be recognised within Nigeria’s basketball administration.

His inclusion on the NBBF Board would provide an opportunity to draw on his institutional experience and maintain a strong link between Nigerian basketball and the wider international game, while supporting efforts to improve the sport at all levels.

The issue for Nigerian basketball goes beyond a board position. It is also about making effective use of the experience, relationships and knowledge built over decades of service to the game.

FIBA has clarified that there is no regulatory impediment to Ahmedu serving on the NBBF Board. The challenge now is to ensure that his experience continues to benefit Nigerian basketball.
