AFEDEV Unveils Tackle League, Eyes New Era of Athlete Development in Nigeria
The American Football Development (AFEDEV) initiative has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform competitive tackle football in Nigeria through the launch of a structured league backed by technology-driven athlete identification and development.
The initiative is designed to create a sustainable pathway for Nigerian athletes by combining high-level competition, player safety, professional administration and data-based talent development.
According to AFEDEV Board Member and former Chief Technology Officer, Josiah Onu Orie, the Tackle League is being positioned as a major platform for athletes to sharpen their skills, gain competitive experience and potentially earn opportunities beyond Nigeria.
Orie described tackle football as the ultimate test of “strategy, strength and collective discipline”, citing the National Football League (NFL) as the global benchmark and a dream destination for many athletes.
He said the AFEDEV Tackle League would seek to establish a new standard for competitive American football in the region while adhering to international safety and administrative principles.
«“Our focus with the Tackle League is three-fold: rigorous technical execution, uncompromising player safety, and high-level team competition,” Orie said.»
He explained that the league would work towards standardised officiating, professional team management and a structured seasonal competition, providing athletes with an organised platform to demonstrate their physical abilities, tactical intelligence and overall development.
Technology at the heart of talent identification
Beyond competition, AFEDEV is placing significant emphasis on technology as part of its strategy to modernise athlete identification and development.
Orie revealed that the organisation has invested in a multi-million-naira software platform known as the Elite Athletes Identification and Development System (EAIDS).
According to him, EAIDS is designed as a comprehensive athlete database and data-management platform capable of tracking an athlete's journey from initial identification and development through performance assessment and potential drafting.
The system incorporates a standardised scoring metric to evaluate players, while development data can be used to identify individual strengths, areas for improvement and specialised training requirements.
Another key feature is its video library, which allows scouts and authorised personnel to monitor and review an athlete's progression at different stages of their career.
Orie believes the system will make talent identification more objective and data-driven while giving coaches, teams and scouts greater insight into player development.
The combination of structured competition and technology, AFEDEV believes, could provide Nigerian athletes with a clearer and more professional pathway from grassroots participation to elite-level American football.

Building a pathway beyond Nigeria
The initiative comes amid growing global interest in American football and the increasing recognition of Nigerian athletes for their physical attributes and potential suitability for the sport.
For AFEDEV, however, the ambition extends beyond simply organising games.
The organisation wants to establish an ecosystem in which athletes can be identified early, developed systematically, assessed objectively and connected to higher levels of competition.
The Tackle League is therefore expected to serve not only as a competitive platform but also as a proving ground where emerging athletes can gain the experience and exposure required to pursue opportunities on the international stage.
If successfully implemented, the league and EAIDS could open a new chapter for American football in Nigeria, providing talented athletes with a structured route to progress from domestic competition towards elite and international opportunities.
