Ingebrigtsen and Kerr set for 1,500m showdown at inaugural Ultimate Championship

Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen is set to renew his intense 1,500m rivalry with Britain's Josh Kerr at World Athletics' inaugural Ultimate Championship next month after both runners were handed exceptional invitations to compete.

The highly anticipated clash will reunite two of middle-distance running's biggest names, who have developed one of athletics' most compelling rivalries in recent years.

Ingebrigtsen has enjoyed the upper hand in their 1,500m meetings, although the Norwegian and Kerr have not gone head-to-head over the distance since the 2024 Zurich Diamond League.

Their rivalry has produced several memorable encounters on the biggest stages. Kerr claimed bronze behind Ingebrigtsen at the Tokyo Olympics before stunning the Norwegian to win 1,500m gold at the 2023 World Championships.

At the Paris Olympics, Kerr took silver behind American Cole Hocker, while Ingebrigtsen was forced to settle for fourth place.

The relationship between the two athletes has also been marked by a series of pointed exchanges away from the track. Ingebrigtsen has previously dismissed Kerr as "just the next guy" and claimed he could defeat him blindfolded, while the Scot has repeatedly insisted that his Norwegian rival has significant weaknesses.

Their verbal rivalry intensified again this month when Ingebrigtsen criticised Kerr's decision to miss the European Championships, saying he was disappointed by the Scot's absence and arguing that athletes skipping major competitions was damaging the sport.

Kerr, however, has enjoyed an impressive season of his own. The Scottish runner broke the world record for the mile at the London Diamond League in July before winning Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow in front of his home crowd.

He subsequently opted to miss the European Championships as part of a decision to manage his workload.

Their reunion at the Ultimate Championship promises to add another chapter to a rivalry that has captivated middle-distance athletics, with both men eager to settle the latest battle on the track rather than through words.
