Ruth Asuquo Nyong wins silver as India's Chanu claims Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold

Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong delivered an impressive performance to secure the country's first weightlifting medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, clinching the silver medal in the women's 48kg event.

Nyong lifted a combined total of 168kg to finish second behind India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who successfully defended her title with a commanding total of 190kg to claim the gold medal.

Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry completed the podium after recording 167kg, just one kilogram behind the Nigerian, to settle for bronze in a closely contested battle for the silver medal.

Jo-Beth Deireragea finished fourth with 161kg, while Tammy Wong placed fifth on 160kg. Nikole Roberts ended sixth with 154kg, Alex Mackay lifted 142kg for seventh, and Janet Atieno Oduor finished eighth with 133kg.

Upamalika Jambulliye Gamladdalage was unable to complete the competition while Thelma Mea Toua did not make the final standings.

Nyong's silver medal provides a significant boost to Team Nigeria's campaign in Glasgow and reinforces the country's reputation as one of the Commonwealth's leading weightlifting nations. 

Her composed display under pressure ensured Nigeria stood proudly on the podium, narrowly edging Malaysia's Henry by just one kilogram in a thrilling contest for second place.
