Kwara United Psychologist, Olatunbosun Says Mental Toughness Key To Next Season Plans
By Maxwell Kumoye
As Kwara United intensify preparations for the new football season, the club is placing greater emphasis on strengthening the mental resilience of its players following the lessons learned from last season.
The Harmony Boys resumed preseason training this week, with the technical crew determined to address the lapses in concentration that proved costly in several matches during the previous campaign.
Speaking on the sidelines of training, the club's psychologist, Yomi Olatunbosun, said the team has identified psychological preparedness as a critical area that requires significant improvement.
According to Olatunbosun, while the players put in commendable performances last season, the inability to maintain focus until the final whistle ultimately denied the team valuable points.
"Psychology plays a major role in preparing for any competition," he said. "This season, we are preparing our players mentally, physically and psychologically. We have learned from last season, and one of the major lessons is that concentration must be sustained throughout every match."
He explained that the club is working to build a stronger mindset within the squad, ensuring players remain composed regardless of the stage of the game.
"The mindset of the players is very important. There is no point in a match where you can afford to relax until the final whistle is blown. Every player must remain focused on the game, work together as a team and stay mentally alert because a momentary lapse in concentration can change the outcome of a match," he said.
Olatunbosun noted that psychological conditioning will form a key part of the club's preparations throughout the season, with players constantly reminded of the importance of maintaining concentration and emotional stability in every fixture.
He expressed confidence that the renewed focus on mental strength, alongside physical and tactical preparations, would help Kwara United avoid the mistakes that hampered their campaign last season.
The sports psychologist also called on supporters to remain firmly behind the team as they begin a new chapter.
"I want to appeal to every Kwaran to support us, stay with us and believe in this project. Kwara United belongs to all of us. We are committed to working hard to ensure the club becomes one of the best teams in the league this season," he said.
