Adeniyi's investment pays off as three Nigerian wrestlers secure Iowa State University scholarships

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation's commitment to developing athletes has received another major boost after three Nigerian female wrestlers secured scholarship transfers to the prestigious Iowa State University in the United States.

Kolawole Esther, Christinah Ogunsanya, and Adekoye Jumoke have moved from William Penn University, an NAIA institution, to Iowa State University, one of the top NCAA Division I wrestling programmes in the United States.

Reacting to the milestone, Nigeria's women's wrestling head coach, Akuh Purity, praised the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, for his unwavering support and investment in the sport, describing the development as a reward for years of strategic planning and international exposure.

Purity said the athletes' transfer marks a defining moment in both their academic and sporting careers, as NCAA Division I represents the highest level of collegiate competition in the United States.

According to the coach, the wrestlers earned the opportunity through consistent participation in international competitions, where their outstanding performances caught the attention of Iowa State University recruiters.

He credited the federation's leadership for creating opportunities that have enabled Nigerian wrestlers to compete on the global stage.

"This achievement is a testament to the vision and dedication of the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation. His financial investment and commitment to athlete development has showcased the immense talent of our wrestlers on the international stage. Seeing Kolawole Esther, Christinah Ogunsanya, and Adekoye Jumoke earn transfers to Iowa State University is a proud moment for Nigerian wrestling," Purity said.

The coach added that the success of the trio demonstrates what Nigerian wrestlers can achieve when provided with quality coaching, structured development, international exposure, and educational opportunities.

Purity also expressed optimism that the achievement would inspire the next generation of wrestlers across the country to pursue excellence both on the mat and in the classroom.

He further called for sustained investment in grassroots wrestling and elite athlete development programmes, insisting that more Nigerian talents can reach the world's biggest stages if given the right support.

The transfer of Esther, Ogunsanya and Jumoke to Iowa State University is being celebrated as another landmark achievement for the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, underscoring its growing success in creating international pathways for Nigerian wrestlers while enhancing the country's reputation in global wrestling.
