Zamalek hit with fresh FIFA transfer ban amid nounting financial troubles
By Maxwell Kumoye
Egyptian giants Zamalek SC have been handed yet another transfer setback after FIFA imposed a three-window transfer ban on the club, marking the 14th sanction against them this season.
The latest disciplinary action stems from unpaid dues owed to Tunisian winger Ahmed Jafeli.
The 22-year-old joined Zamalek from US Monastir in the winter of 2025 but struggled to secure a regular place in the squad.
Jafeli was subsequently loaned out to Saudi side Abha Club later that summer, before returning to Cairo six months afterward.
However, unresolved financial obligations related to his transfer have now triggered FIFA’s latest sanctions.
Zamalek’s financial instability has been a recurring issue in recent years, with the club repeatedly penalized over unpaid debts and contractual disputes.
The latest ruling adds further pressure on the Cairo-based side, who must now resolve all outstanding cases before the end of May.
Failure to do so could jeopardize their participation in next season’s continental competitions, as Confederation of African Football regulations require clubs to clear all financial liabilities before being granted a competition license.
Despite their off-field struggles, Zamalek has enjoyed a strong domestic campaign.
The 2022 Egyptian Premier League champions currently sit at the top of the standings with 43 points heading into the decisive phase of the season.
On the continental front, the White Knights remain in contention for silverware after advancing to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, following a 3-2 aggregate victory over AS Otoho d’Oyo.
As the season enters a critical stage, Zamalek faces a race against time—not just to maintain their on-field momentum, but to resolve lingering financial issues that threaten to derail their ambitions.
