Accra has officially set the stage for one of Africa’s biggest athletics spectacles, as the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships were launched in grand style on Wednesday, signaling the countdown to a historic continental showdown.
The Ghanaian capital will play host to elite track and field stars from across the continent between May 12 and May 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium, marking the first time the West African nation will stage the prestigious event.
Top names expected to light up the championships include Botswana sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo, Kenya’s middle-distance queen Faith Kipyegon, and long-distance standout Beatrice Chebet, a trio that underlines the world-class quality fans can expect in Accra.
At the official launch, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, emphasized the transformative power of athletics, calling for deliberate investment in infrastructure to unlock the country’s sporting potential.
He noted that while Ghana continues to produce promising talents, the lack of adequate training facilities in some regions remains a major setback.
According to him, hosting Accra 2026 should not only be about competition but also about creating inspiration and opportunity for the next generation.
“This championship must serve as a platform for young athletes to witness excellence firsthand and believe in their own potential,” Adams stated, stressing that exposure to elite performance can ignite ambition among emerging stars.
Beyond the medals and records, Ghana is positioning the championships as a statement of intent, showcasing its growing capacity to host major sporting events while strengthening its athletics ecosystem.
With preparations now in full swing, anticipation is building for a championship that promises not just thrilling competition, but a lasting legacy for athletics development in Ghana and across the continent.
