Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, will come alive on Saturday as top government officials and sports administrators converge for the official opening of the 3rd National Para Games at the iconic Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Leading the high-profile ceremony is Presidential Spokesperson and former Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, alongside the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and the Commission’s Director General, Bukola Olopade.

The Games, which began on March 26, will run through April 3, bringing together over 3,000 athletes representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in what is regarded as Nigeria’s premier para-sport event.

Competitors will battle for honours across 15 sports, including para athletics, wheelchair basketball, para swimming, amputee football, sitting volleyball, para powerlifting, and wheelchair tennis.

The scale of participation marks one of the largest assemblies of para-athletes in the country’s history, underlining the steady growth of inclusive sports development in Nigeria.

Organised by the National Sports Commission, the biennial event has evolved into a vital platform for discovering new talents and preparing elite athletes for global competitions such as the Paralympic Games, African Championships, and the Commonwealth Games.

Beyond the medals and podium finishes, the Games continue to serve as a celebration of resilience and human spirit, highlighting the extraordinary abilities of athletes living with disabilities while promoting social inclusion and equal opportunity nationwide.

The presence of key government figures at the opening ceremony signals renewed commitment by authorities to the advancement of para sports, as Nigeria aims to strengthen its position on the global stage.

With anticipation building, all eyes now turn to Abuja, where courage, determination, and excellence are set to define yet another memorable edition of the National Para Games.
