Legends repeat rare feat of humbling Champions at home

Lagos Legends Basketball Club delivered one of the coldest heartbreaks in Nigerian basketball history on Sunday, stunning Rivers Hoopers 74–72 in a nerve-shredding finale to snatch the 2025 Nigeria Basketball Premier League title in Port Harcourt.

The loss marked a dark piece of déjà vu for Rivers Hoopers, formerly Royal Hoopers, who were beaten at home in a championship final for only the second time ever. 

The first time came 15 years ago, when Kano Pillars silenced the Civic Centre crowd in the 2010 final.

On Sunday night, Lagos Legends reopened that wound.

Both teams entered the decisive clash unbeaten in the Final Four, each with two wins and one golden prize in front of them, Nigeria’s lone ticket to the 2026 Basketball Africa League.

The Legends, who had already snapped Hoopers’ three-year unbeaten streak with an 80–79 thriller at the Final Eight, came out swinging again. Rivers Hoopers edged the first quarter 20–19, but it was clear the champions were in for a street fight, not a coronation.

The second quarter was trench warfare, bodies flying, nerves rattling, and baskets rare, ending 32–32 at the break.
Hoopers found daylight in the third quarter, grinding out a 52–49 lead, but Lagos Legends refused to break. With ruthless resolve, they dragged the score to 61–61 midway through the fourth, then surged ahead. 

The home crowd roared the champions back into it, and Hoopers tied it 70–70 with 39 seconds left in the hall of thunder.

Then came the twist.

Rivers Hoopers scored two points to edge ahead, but the Legends responded with ice in their veins, dropping four clutch points in the dying seconds to silence the arena and rip the title from the reigning kings.

The defeat denied Hoopers, 2024 BAL bronze medallists, a chance at a historic third straight league crown and handed Lagos Legends their ticket to the 2026 Basketball Africa League.

The result also tilted the season’s rivalry firmly toward Lagos, the Legends have now beaten Rivers Hoopers twice in three meetings, losing only once, an 89–70 blowout in the Inter-Group Phase.

This time, though, the victory was more than a win. It was a bold statement. A dethroning.

And a historic night when Lagos Legends joined Kano Pillars in the exclusive club of teams that walked into Port Harcourt and broke the Hoopers’ heart at home in a final.
