Ghana’s sports revolution gained fresh momentum on Tuesday as legendary Black Stars icon Abedi Ayew “Pele” was unveiled as a member of a newly constituted Ministerial Advisory Board, a high-powered think tank set to shape the future of sports and recreation across the nation.

The nine-member board, inaugurated by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, signals Ghana’s most ambitious push yet to overhaul its sports sector, deepen accountability, and unlock the full potential of its youth and athletes.

The board blends government technocrats, private-sector innovators and civil society voices, featuring:

• Honourable Kofi Iddie Adams (MP) – Minister/Chairman

• Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah – Chief Director, Sports Ministry

• Ambassador Alexander Grant Ntrakwa – Ministry of Foreign Affairs

• Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu – Ministry of Education

• Ms. Amerley Nuno-Amarteifio – Ministry of Finance

• Mr. Tsonam Cleanse Akpeloo – CEO, Suku Technologies / AGI

• COP Lydia Yaako Donkor – CID Director-General

• Mr. Abedi Ayew Pele – Ghana football legend

• Mr. Michael Esuon – Director, Finance and Admin – Secretary

Abedi Pele’s presence, symbolic, inspiring and deeply strategic, was the headline moment. The three-time African Footballer of the Year brings unmatched experience in elite sport and youth development, strengthening a board expected to drive Ghana’s next wave of sporting transformation.

Minister Adams charged the group to deliver “bold, practical, and transformative ideas” that will entrench good governance, expand youth pathways and ensure broader participation across all sporting codes.

But the clearest sign of Ghana’s new direction is the Sports Development Fund, now nearing completion and set to be presented to Parliament. The policy, touted as a game-changer, aims to create sustainable, long-term financing for infrastructure, grassroots academies, community sports centres and high-performance systems.

Sports analysts are already calling it one of the most progressive funding models on the continent, positioning Ghana to rival African sports powerhouses in talent development, facilities and performance.

With a superstar like Abedi Pele at the table and a forward-thinking funding strategy in the works, Ghana is not just announcing reforms, it is firing the opening shot of a bold, continent-shaping sports renaissance.

The message is clear, Ghana isn’t waiting for the future of sports. It’s building it.
