The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has distanced itself from two individuals, Ms. Olatutu Oladunni and Mr. Bello Omotunde, declaring that they are no longer officials or members of its Lagos State Chapter.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by the Association’s Secretary-General, Ikenna Okonkwo, the National Executive Committee (NEC) said the duo were suspended from all SWAN activities for acts of gross misconduct.
Okonkwo explained that the decision, taken in line with Article 21, Section (1) A and C of the SWAN Statute, empowers the NEC to discipline erring officers and members. The suspension, he said, took immediate effect, rendering the two ineligible to act on behalf of the Association in any capacity.
“The attention of the National Secretariat has been drawn to illegal and self-styled activities being organized by the suspended duo, including claims of conducting elections purportedly in the name of SWAN Lagos State Chapter,” the statement read. “The National Secretariat reiterates that such actions are null, void, and of no effect whatsoever.”
The Association warned security agencies, corporate partners, media organizations, and members of the public to desist from engaging with the suspended individuals, noting that their continued impersonation amounts to a violation of the Association’s statutes and their suspension order.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Executive Committee reiterates that the only recognized leadership of the Lagos State Chapter of SWAN remains under the coordination of the Acting Chairman, Mr. Aaron Akerejola, pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations by the Independent Investigation Committee (IIC),” the statement added.
SWAN reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and due process, pledging to continue working with security authorities to maintain order and uphold discipline within its ranks.
