NSC to Inspect Enugu Facilities Ahead of 2026 National Sports Festival

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced plans to embark on an inspection tour of sports facilities in Enugu State from October 21 to 24, 2025, as part of preparations for the 23rd National Sports Festival, tagged “Coal City Games 2026.”

According to the Commission, the inspection exercise will be led by senior officials from the country’s apex sports body. The visit aims to ensure that facilities meet the required standards and that Enugu is fully prepared to host a world-class sporting event that celebrates excellence, unity, and talent development.

During the four-day visit, the NSC team is expected to:

• Assess existing sports infrastructure

• Review progress on renovation and upgrade projects

• Engage with local stakeholders to ensure adequate readiness to welcome athletes and fans nationwide.

The Commission expressed appreciation to the Enugu State Government for its ongoing commitment to hosting a successful festival, describing the partnership as a vital step toward advancing Nigeria’s sporting landscape.

However, findings by our correspondents reveal that several facilities expected to be ready for the games remain incomplete, raising concerns about the state’s preparedness.

After the inspection, the NSC delegation is expected to present a detailed report of their findings, which will guide the Commission’s next steps — including the possibility of activating a Plan B if Enugu fails to meet required standards.

The National Sports Festival remains Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event, renowned as a breeding ground for emerging champions and a unifying platform for athletes across the federation. The NSC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Enugu State to deliver a festival that will “inspire the nation and leave a lasting legacy.”
