Lagos State' contingent to the 9th edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, South-South, Nigeria, did more than make history at the multi-sport showpiece, they proved their worth as they dethroned Perennial-rivals, Hosts and Defending Champions —Team Delta.
The euphoria is not dying, as the sports fraternity in the Center of Excellence, is abuzz with excitement and felicitations.
An experienced sports administrator, who played a pivotal role in ensuring Team Lagos dominated the annual event, by topping the medals table is none other than Honourable Damilare Orimoloye who also doubles as the Senior Special Assistant on Sports, to the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and he was quick to remind everyone that the historic feat was no fluke.
"Finishing first wasn’t a fluke, but a perfect representation of ‘preparation meets performance’. What with a total of 110 medals including a record-breaking 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals.
"We had impressive hauls across various sports, such as Football, Volleyball, Swimming, Gymnastics, Shooting, Athletics, Tennis, and Ayo Olopon. And we are incredibly proud of every athlete, who represented Lagos with courage and might," Orimoloye streesed.
Hon. Orimoloye did not relent in appreciating the Lagos State Government, for empowering the young talents who repaid their trust by bringing glory to the State. “A special appreciation goes to our Number One Cheerleader, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his deliberate and intentional support.
“I’d also extend my congratulations to the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Hon. Lekan Fatodu, my fellow Senior Special Assistant’s, the Staff and Management of the State Sports Commission, Coaches, and also Parents on this incredible feat.
“This is just the beginning of greater things to come for Team Lagos,” the amiable and youthful Orimoloye concluded.
