'The Land of Honour and Integrity' - Ekiti State is making a bold and strong sporting statement in Asaba, Delta State, venue of the 9th National Sports Games.

The impressive and bold story continued on Thursday, as Ekiti mine gold in male Basketball.

Team Ekiti edged past Team Lagos 19-18 in a thrilling basketball final.

Both teams showcased determination, skill, and composure, but the Ekiti squad demonstrated greater resilience to secure the gold in a closely contested match.

State Basketball Coach Adetayo Awojinrin expressed pride in the players’ performance:

“I am happy God crowned our efforts with success. Despite the tough matches we faced during the group stage, we managed to defeat Lagos in the final.
 
“I am proud of the team and believe this success will inspire them to win more gold medals in the future,” Awojinrin said.

In Kungfu, Funbi Adedoyin secured bronze in the 48kg female category.

Head Coach, Ronke Raji, praising her resilience against competitors from other states.

Another proud representative from Ekiti at the Games, para athlete, Suleiman Abdulazeez, added to the medal count by winning Gold in Discus and Silver in Shot Put.

Meanwhile, three athletes from Team Ekiti, Abdulazeez Suleiman, Precious Ayodele (Ayo Olopon player), and Damilola Oni (cricket player), have been invited to the National Federation for their exceptional performances.

With these achievements, Team Ekiti currently boasts a total of two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, further cementing their status as one of the top-performing teams at Asaba 2025.

This sterling performance, the Technical Advisor on Sports Development to the Governor of Ekiti, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, says is the result of huge investment in sports by His Excellency, Governor Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji.

She explained that the transformation which has taken place in the Land of Honour and Integrity as the state is passionately called, helped the team to prepare fully for the Games.

Dr. Olusola Osetoba further explained that the new facilities helped the state to select young athletes to represent Ekiti through secondary school games held at the new sports facilities built by the sports-loving Governor.

“I'm very elated, I'm overwhelmed with joy, this is the first time, we have won the basketball event,” she explained.

She emphasized that this only the fringes of the record-breaking and history-making performances the State Team will produce in the next edition.

Under the stewardship of His Excellency Governor Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji, Ekiti State has been blessed with these new facilities:

★ Brand new Coaster busses
★ New hostels for our football clubs
★ Renovation of Oluyomi Kayode Stadium
★ Construction of admin blocks
★ A new multi-purpose sports hall

“I want to thank the Governor for his unwavering and undeniable support towards sports, financially and morally, he has been a father to sports, he's a sports loving governor, persons like him are very rare, he has transformed every facet of sports in the State,” the cultured and graceful sports administrator concluded.
