Ghana awarded hosting rights of 2026 Africa Armwrestling Championship

The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), in partnership with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), has announced that Ghana will host the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship from May 27 to 31, 2026, in Accra, the Ghanian capital.
The championship which was moved from its traditional July date, will also serve as the qualifier for the 2027 African Games armwrestling competition.
The Secretary, Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), Julien Boumsong, confirmed the decision and urged all member countries to begin preparing their teams for the continental showdown.
The President, Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), who also serves as the President, Armwrestling Federation of Africa, and Vice President, World Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, promised stakeholders that they will deliver an exceptional tournament.
“We are doing everything possible to make sure this championship will be a very wonderful event. As hosts, Ghana is ready to showcase not only its organizational capacity but also the best of African armwrestling to the world,” The former Communications Director, Ghana Olympic Committee, who also doubles as the General Secretary, Sports Writers Association of Ghana stated.
The event follows the outstanding hosting of the 14th edition of the annual Championship by the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAF).
The 2025 edition of the Championship that saw participation from over 20 African nations, took place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, North-Central, Nigeria, from the 23rd to 27th of July, 2025.
Team Nigeria were crowned champions after winning 28 gold, 35 silver, and 38 bronze medals across male, female, and para categories.
The hosts as made history by fielded its largest-ever squad in the history of the competition with 172 athletes, as they dominating the left-hand category on the opening day with 24 gold, 19 silver, and 19 bronze medals.
Abuja 2025, was widely praised for its high energy, crowd turnout, and improved organizational standards, setting the stage for Accra 2026.
Defending Champions, Nigeria, perennial-rivals Ghana, neighbors Cameroon and Benin Republic alongside a host of others nations are now expected to battle fiercely in Accra, the Ghanian capital as the competition doubles as the pathway to the 2027 African Games.
Details on registration, competition rules, and accommodation for the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship will be announced in the coming weeks.
