History was made at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, South-West, Nigeria, as Beyond Limits FC inscribed their name in gold and folklore of grassroots football in the country, by becoming the first-ever champions of the TCC Super Cup.
The highly-anticipated clash between Beyond Limits and Real Sapphire FC lived up to its billing, delivering intensity, drama and a fitting story of redemption. In the end, it was a 53rd-minute strike from Akinocho Merveille that proved the difference, sealing a 1-0 victory for Beyond Limits and crowning them as the maiden champions of the competition.
For the Ikenne-based side, the triumph carried an extra layer of significance. Last season, they lost the TCC League title to Real Sapphire, ending a remarkable run of four consecutive league championships. Friday’s Super Cup showdown presented the perfect opportunity for revenge, and Beyond Limits seized it with grit and determination.
★ A Tale of Two Coaches
Before kickoff, Real Sapphire’s head coach Onaolapo Bidemi, had boldly declared that his team were ready to extend their dominance over Beyond Limits. “We would do everything possible to bring the cup home. We have to continue our unbeaten run against them and show we are the football gladiators,” he said.
But football has its way of humbling bold predictions. When the final whistle blew in Onikan, it was Beyond Limits who celebrated as history-makers.
On the other hand, Beyond Limits’ head coach, Olumide Ajibolade, had spoken with quiet confidence before the encounter. “We would compete for the trophy; however, the outcome would be the consequences of our preparation,” he said. His words rang true, as his players’ preparation and hunger carried them over the line.
The Super Cup win is more than just a piece of silverware for Beyond Limits. It is a reminder of their resilience, their never-say-die spirit, and their relentless pursuit of excellence. For the players, coaching staff and fans, this title represents not just revenge but also the start of a new chapter that proves they remain a force to be reckoned with in Nigerian grassroots football.
The boys from Ikenne are once again living up to their motto of having “No Limit.”
