The Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable Emomotimi Guwor Dennis, has described the 9th National Youth Games, taking place in the Sun City, Asaba, Delta State as clear and undeniable evidence of the love, passion and zeal for sports of the oil-rich State.

Honourable Emomotimi Guwor Dennis, stated that the transformation which has taken place in Delta, has created the platform for champions to be born and talents to be seen and recognised.

He gave this submission during his welcome address at the opening ceremony of the National Youth Games, representing the Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Rt. Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori.

“Here in Delta State, our people are very passionate about sports, sports is part of who we are, over the years, we have built a record as the home of champions, from athletics to football, boxing and basketball. Delta State has always produced stars, who shine on the continental and global stage.

“Asaba 2025 is a proof of what we stand for, World-class facilities, smooth organisation and the warm environment, where every athlete can give their best,” he said.

He added that for the people of Delta State, the Games is an opportunity to display their warm hospitality, bringing Nigeria together as one under the umbrella of sports.

“Today is a special day, as we welcome all participants to this event, it's a celebration of our young people, of unity and the prosperous future that Nigeria holds, sports is a language that goes beyond, tribe and religion, it brings us together as one people, with one shared dreams and victories,” he emphasized.

He went on to add that grassroot development and youth empowerment plays a critical role in the administration of the Delta State government, and it's the driving force behind the creation of various sporting facilities.

The further explained that drive by the Delta State government, not only develops young athletes but also creates jobs across the State 

“This is administration is steadfast on youth empowerment, hence it's commitment to improve sports and it's facilities at all levels, here in Asaba we have built sports facilities that meet the international standards, construction of the township arena into a world-class stadium is ongoing. This projects are not just for competitions, but to create champions, create jobs and to bring tourism to our state,” he stressed.

He went on to list a number of athletes who have projected Delta State in positive light to the world.

“We celebrate legends like the late Stephen Keshi, who lifted Nigerian football to global heights, Jay Jay Okocha, Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume, they are proof of all Delta produces, athletes who inspire new generations,” he concluded.

He therefore called on other corporate bodies and well meaning individuals with deep pockets, to support sports development in the state to take the state to a higher level.
