ANOCA to honour Nigeria's D'Tigress Coach Rena Wakama

The Head Coach of Nigeria female national team, D'Tigress, Rena Wakama, has been named as the Best Basketball Coach by the Continental Olympic Body, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).

The 32 year old gaffer received the noble and prestigious award following her impressive performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

At the Olympic Games, under Wakama' leadership, D’Tigress became the first African team, male or female, to reach the last 8 of basketball event at the Olympics after beating Canada 79-70.

She was also named the Best Coach of the basketball event by FIBA. 

It will also interest you to know that, In 2023, she became the first female Head Coach of D’Tigress, and became the first Nigerian National Female Basketball Team coach to win the FIBA AfroBasket Women competition since it began in 1966. She achieved this remarkable feet without dropping a game.

The President of ANOCA, Mr. Mustafa Berraf, stated that Rena Wakama will be among the distinguished guests of ANOCA to receive an award.

Wakama who is also the assistant coach at Tulane University will be accommodated at the luxurious Holiday Inn Hotel, Cheraga Towers, Algiers by the continental body during the awards ceremony 

"I therefore have the honor to inform you that on the sidelines of this important assembly, an award ceremony will take place for the most deserving African sports laureates, who have distinguished themselves both at the continental and world levels," he explained.

The D'Tigress lost 88-74 to the U.S., in the crucial quarters that could have catapulted them in the semis, to still to have a best possible attainment in the Male and Female Olympic campaign to date.

The ANOCA Elective General Assembly will be held from March 15 to March 17, 2025 during which the award ceremonies will be staged.
