Who will sustain Ogun Scrabble's new standard
By Maxwell Kumoye
As the Ogun State Scrabble Association (OSSA) prepares for a change in leadership, head coach Bukumi Afolayan has raised the question on the minds of many stakeholders, who will be able to sustain the remarkable standards set by outgoing chairman, Mr. Adekoyejo Adegbesan?
In an emotional tribute to the departing chairman, Afolayan reflected on the transformation of the association since its inauguration on August 24, 2022, describing Adegbesan's tenure as one that revolutionised Scrabble in Ogun State.
"The question ringing in my mind is, 'How do we sustain the standard this outgoing Association has brought here?'" Afolayan asked.
She recalled how the process began in 2022 when she approached MGI boss, Mr. Lukeman Owolabi, to serve as chairman of the association.
However, Owolabi, who is now the President of World English Players Association (WESPA), recommended Adegbesan for the role, a suggestion that proved pivotal to the growth of the sport in the state.
According to Afolayan a multiple national champion, immediately after the association was inaugurated, the new leadership embarked on an ambitious rebuilding process, starting with the complete renovation of the Scrabble playing arena into a modern, attractive and conducive venue for players.
The association also introduced several initiatives that inspired players and officials alike, including cash rewards, sponsorship for tournaments, travel opportunities and other welfare packages that contributed to the state's impressive performances.
Beyond the achievements, Afolayan praised Adegbesan's leadership style, noting that he built strong personal relationships with players and members by treating them as family.
"One thing that continually amazes me is how our Chairman stays connected with everyone, relating to each person either as a father figure or an elder brother. His leadership has been truly inspiring," she said.
She also reserved special appreciation for the association's Vice Chairman Mr. Lukeman Owolabi for his unwavering encouragement and generosity, while thanking every member of the executive committee for their collective efforts in moving Ogun Scrabble forward.
With a new chairman yet to be announced, Afolayan the winner of the maiden edition of the All Nigeria Amazon Scrabble Championship, expressed hope that whoever succeeds Adegbesan will preserve the culture of excellence established during the outgoing administration and continue the progress that has made the Ogun State Scrabble Association one of the country's leading state associations.
