The growing success of two young Scrabble players from Niger State at the just-concluded World Youth Scrabble Championship in Kenya is inspiring renewed interest in the game among pupils, students, teachers and parents across the state.

The remarkable exploits of siblings Saviour and Salvation Onazi, products of the emerging Onazi Scrabble dynasty, have provided a major boost to efforts to take Scrabble to more primary and secondary schools in Niger State.

Saviour Onazi, a student of the Federal Government Academy (FGA), Suleja, currently in Junior Secondary School 3, emerged as the World Youth Scrabble Championship Under-12 runner-up in Kenya. He is also the reigning Nigerian Under-15 Scrabble Champion.

His younger sister, Salvation Onazi, equally distinguished herself at the championship. She is the reigning Nigerian Female Under-10 Scrabble Champion a pupil seeking a desk in the classroom of FGA Suleja.

The siblings’ outstanding performances have generated excitement among young people in Niger State, with more schools showing interest in introducing and developing Scrabble programmes for their pupils and students.

The impact is also being felt beyond the classrooms, as parents and teachers are increasingly taking an interest in the game and recognising its educational benefits, particularly in vocabulary development, concentration, strategic thinking, mental agility and decision-making.

The Onazi siblings’ achievements have therefore become a source of inspiration to a new generation of young Scrabble enthusiasts, demonstrating that talent nurtured at the grassroots level can produce players capable of competing successfully on the international stage.

The success story is also linked to the commitment of the Niger State Government, through the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development and the Niger State Sports Commission, which sponsored a four-member Team Nigeria contingent to the championship in Kenya.

The state government’s support underscores the importance of investing in young talents and providing them with opportunities to compete at major international competitions.

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has expressed delight with the sterling performance of the Onazi siblings, describing their achievements as a positive development for the future of Nigerian Scrabble.

The federation is expected to continue supporting the young champions as they develop their careers, while encouraging more schools, parents and teachers to embrace the game and create opportunities for young talents to flourish.

With the growing interest generated by the Onazi siblings’ success, Scrabble is increasingly gaining recognition in Niger State not just as a competitive sport, but also as an important tool for developing the intellectual and strategic abilities of young Nigerians.
