Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.

Hassan reportedly died on Sunday after battling stage-four cancer.

His daughter, Kira Hassan, broke the news in an emotional Instagram Live session, struggling to contain her emotions as she said, “My daddy is dead. I can’t believe it.”

Entertainment platform Emiralty Africa also announced the actor’s death, describing him as a “star filmmaker” and expressing sadness over his passing.

The news came just days after Kira had spoken publicly about her father’s deteriorating health and the emotional and financial burden the family had faced during his treatment.

In a TikTok Live session on Saturday, she alleged that some individuals had approached the family offering assistance but attaching huge financial demands to their offers.

According to her, the family had been confronted with requests ranging from N800,000 and N5 million to $11,000 and $18,000.

“My father is a good father. Some people are even trying to make money with us in this whole situation. Fear God,” she said, questioning how the family was expected to meet such demands.

Kira stressed that the family was primarily concerned with ensuring that her father received proper medical attention, adding that the situation had also taken a toll on her own wellbeing.

“I want to check my BP. I am not okay too,” she said.

The actor’s illness reportedly affected the entire family, with Kira particularly worried about the impact of his condition on her uncle, whom she affectionately called her “big daddy.”

She recalled a conversation in the family’s group chat in which her cousin revealed that her uncle had asked whether Taiwo would die.

“That was the video my big daddy saw, and on the group chat, where we always have our discussion about daddy’s health, I saw my cousin wrote something like, my big daddy was asking, ‘Is Taiye going to die?’” she said.

Kira described the relationship between the two brothers as exceptionally close, saying the family found it difficult to watch both men go through the ordeal.

“My big daddy and my daddy, we are the children; we don’t even know who they love more. We don’t even know if it is we who are being or themselves. It is too much. My big daddy loves my daddy too much,” she said.

She added that she feared her uncle would struggle to cope with the loss.

“I am sure my big daddy is not okay; he is not fine. He is not fine. I don’t know,” she said.

In another emotional revelation, Kira said her father’s illness had forced her to withdraw from social media because constantly seeing pictures of him was becoming too painful.

She also admitted that she could not imagine life without the veteran actor.

“I don’t know how I will feel. I don’t even know how I will see the world again. If anything happens to my daddy…” she said.

Kira insisted that her emotional outpouring was not intended to solicit sympathy, explaining that her relationship with her father went far beyond that of a parent and child.

“I am so connected to my daddy. Nothing can be okay, ever. He just wants the best for everybody. He just wants everybody to be okay,” she said.

With his death, Nollywood lost one of its recognisable veteran performers and filmmakers, bringing an end to a career that earned Taiwo Hassan a prominent place in the Nigerian film industry.
