Espi’s 90th-Minute Strike Rescues Real Madrid in Dramatic Win at Espanyol

Real Madrid were forced to dig deep on the opening night of their LaLiga campaign before a late Carlo Espi strike secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday.

Madrid appeared to have made the perfect start after Jude Bellingham opened the scoring in the ninth minute. The England midfielder rose above the defence to meet Arda Guler’s inviting cross, directing his header inside the near post.

Espanyol responded with character and gradually grew into the contest, eventually finding an equaliser in the 30th minute. Javi Hernandez burst into the area before cutting the ball back to Alex Calatrava, who had been left unmarked and calmly finished past Thibaut Courtois.

With Real struggling to regain control after the break, coach Jose Mourinho turned to his substitutes in search of a winning goal.

His decision eventually paid off.

Espi was introduced with 10 minutes remaining and proved to be the match-winner. The youngster reacted quickest after Kylian Mbappe was dispossessed, pouncing on the loose ball before unleashing a powerful finish into the net in the 90th minute.

The late goal spared Real Madrid an unexpected setback and handed them three points in a hard-fought start to their league campaign.
