Disu hails Nathaniel’s Commonwealth triumph, promises bigger backing for police athletes

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has pledged stronger institutional support for sports development in the Nigeria Police Force after receiving Commonwealth Games 400m hurdles champion, Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Nathaniel’s visit provided an opportunity for the police authorities to celebrate one of their own, with Disu describing the athlete’s success as a shining example of what can be achieved when sporting talent is properly identified and supported.

The IGP said Nathaniel’s accomplishment had brought pride not only to the officer but also to the Police Force and Nigeria, stressing that sports and policing share important values such as discipline, teamwork and excellence.

Disu, who disclosed that he is also a sportsman, said Nathaniel’s victory reinforced the need for the Force to continue providing opportunities for talented personnel to excel in competitive sports.

He assured police athletes that their sporting ambitions would receive greater attention, promising sustained investment in programmes designed to discover and develop talents within the ranks.

“This Force will continue to invest in and support police sports. We will keep identifying, nurturing and celebrating talent within our ranks,” Disu stated.

According to him, developing physically and mentally strong personnel through sports would ultimately contribute to a more effective police service.

The Inspector-General congratulated Nathaniel for his achievement and urged him to see the Commonwealth title as the beginning of an even more successful career.

“Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, you have honoured your uniform, your Force and your country,” Disu said.

The reception underscores the growing recognition of the contribution of police athletes to Nigeria’s sporting success and the Police Force’s intention to play a bigger role in producing elite competitors for the country.
