Cape Verde Appoint Humberto Bettencourt as New Head Coach
Cape Verde have appointed Humberto Bettencourt as their new head coach following the departure of Bubista, who guided the island nation to a historic run at last month’s World Cup in North America.
Bettencourt, 51, steps into the role after serving as an assistant coach with the national team. He has been part of the coaching setup for the past six years and played a key role in the team’s development during that period.
Cape Verde emerged as one of the surprise packages of the tournament, reaching the knockout stage on their World Cup debut. Their campaign eventually came to an end in extra time against Argentina, following an impressive run through the group phase and first-round stage.
The appointment marks a promotion for Bettencourt, who will now take charge of a team that has gained international recognition after its breakthrough World Cup campaign.
The Cape Verdean Football Federation did not disclose the length or financial terms of Bettencourt’s contract.
Bubista stepped down from the national team role after the World Cup and has since taken charge of Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane. The club reached the semi-finals of the African Champions League last season.
