Nigeria Strengthens Continental Sporting Status with 2027 Beach Volleyball Hosting Rights

Nigeria has further strengthened its credentials as one of Africa's emerging sporting hubs after securing the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship, with Lagos selected to stage the continental showpiece.

The award, announced by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), underscores growing continental confidence in Nigeria's capacity to organise world-class sporting events and comes on the heels of the country's successful bid to host the second edition of the African School Games in 2027.

Speaking in Abuja, ANOCA President, Mustapha Berraf, said the decision to award the championship to Nigeria was informed by the sweeping reforms being implemented by the National Sports Commission (NSC) under the leadership of its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade.

Berraf commended the Federal Government for prioritising sports development, noting that Nigeria's recent commitment to sports administration and infrastructure made the country the natural choice to host the championship.

"I want to thank the Federal Government of Nigeria for what it has been doing in sports in recent times. That is why we wasted no time in awarding Nigeria the hosting rights," Berraf said.

He also cited Nigeria's proven ability to deliver major sporting events, recalling the country's successful hosting of the African U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta after stepping in at short notice and completing preparations within three months.

According to him, such an achievement reflects a nation that is purposeful, organised and fully committed to advancing sports development.

For the National Sports Commission, the successful bid represents another milestone in its strategy of leveraging international sporting events to stimulate economic growth, tourism and infrastructure development.

"We are serious about boosting the country's sports economy, and one of the ways to achieve this is by attracting more international sporting events to Nigeria," Dikko said.

Olopade, meanwhile, attributed Nigeria's growing success in winning hosting rights for major competitions to the strong backing of the Federal Government, describing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the most sports-friendly leader the country has witnessed.

In another significant development, Berraf disclosed that discussions are at an advanced stage for Nigeria to host Africa's qualification events for the 2030 Olympic Games.

The proposal, being championed by ANOCA in collaboration with the African Union, is designed to enable African nations to compete for Olympic qualification on the continent, reducing the financial burden of travelling to Europe and other regions to secure qualification slots.

Should the proposal materialise, Nigeria would further consolidate its position as one of Africa's leading destinations for international sporting events while reinforcing the National Sports Commission's ambition to make sports a major contributor to national development and economic growth.
