Cameroon eye strong WAFCON 2026 start after dramatic qualification reprieve
The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon have entered the final phase of preparations for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, determined to justify their late inclusion in the tournament with an impressive campaign.
Under the guidance of coach Valentine Nguele, the seven-time WAFCON finalists are fine-tuning tactics and fitness as they target a deep run in the 16th edition of Africa's premier women's football competition.
Cameroon heads into the tournament under intense scrutiny after initially being eliminated by Algeria during the qualifiers before later being reinstated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The unexpected reprieve has placed added pressure on the Central Africans to prove they deserve their place among the continent's elite.
Although the team's travel arrangements are yet to be finalised, their group-stage fixtures have already been confirmed.
Drawn in Group D, the Indomitable Lionesses will begin their campaign against Mali on July 29 at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. A winning start is expected to be crucial in boosting their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
Cameroon will then face regional powerhouse Ghana on August 2 at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in what is widely expected to be the defining fixture of the group. The clash against the Black Queens could prove decisive in the battle for qualification.
The Lionesses will conclude their group campaign against tournament debutants Cape Verde, returning to the Larbi Zaouli Stadium for their final first-round encounter.
Led by experienced stars such as captain Aboudi Onguene and Cathy Biya, Cameroon will be aiming to make a strong statement in Morocco after their dramatic route to qualification.
With three challenging group matches ahead, the Indomitable Lionesses know that a convincing performance in the opening round will be vital if they are to re-establish themselves as one of Africa's leading women's football nations.
