Muda Lawal stadium set for revival as Ogun SWAN backs NSC initiative
By Maxwell Kumoye
The planned rehabilitation of the iconic Muda Lawal Stadium in Asero, Abeokuta, has received a major endorsement from the Ogun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), which believes the project could herald a new era for sports development in the state.
Reacting to the National Sports Commission's decision to revamp the facility, Ogun SWAN Chairman, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, described the move as a welcome development for athletes, coaches and sports enthusiasts who have long desired the restoration of one of the state's most recognizable sporting landmarks.
For decades, the Muda Lawal Stadium has served as a hub for sporting activities in Ogun State, producing talents who have gone on to excel at national and international levels.
PHowever, years of wear and limited upgrades have reduced its capacity to host major competitions and adequately serve the growing sporting population.
Ogunsiji said the intervention by the NSC demonstrates a clear understanding of the role quality infrastructure plays in talent discovery and athlete development.
According to him, modern sports facilities are critical to nurturing the next generation of champions, and the planned facelift of the stadium is expected to provide a conducive environment for training, competitions and youth engagement programmes.
The SWAN chairman further noted that beyond sports, the project could generate wider socio-economic benefits for Abeokuta and its environs by attracting tournaments, increasing visitor traffic and stimulating business activities around the facility.
He expressed hope that the renovation would be carried out in line with global best practices, ensuring that the stadium meets contemporary standards required for hosting top-level events.
While applauding the NSC for the initiative, Ogunsiji called on all stakeholders to support the project and ensure its successful completion, stressing that sustainable investment in sports infrastructure remains vital to the growth of Nigerian sports.
He reaffirmed Ogun SWAN's commitment to promoting initiatives that enhance sports development and create opportunities for young Nigerians to maximize their potential through athletics and other sporting disciplines.
