Nice mayor blocks 2030 Olympic hockey plans

The organisers of the 2030 Winter Olympics are considering Paris and Lyon as potential venues for ice hockey, due to political deadlock in the host city. This follows the new governor's refusal to move the local football club for the tournament.

The French Alps 2030 Winter Olympics organising committee is re-evaluating its venue strategy for ice hockey following the impasse in the city of Nice. Originally intended to serve as the hub for all ice and skating disciplines, the Mediterranean resort city may now share hosting duties with Paris or Lyon after local leadership opposed the use of existing infrastructure.

The shift in strategy stems from a refusal by the newly elected mayor of Nice, Eric Ciotti, to allow the temporary conversion of the Allianz Riviera - the city's primary soccer stadium - into an Olympic ice hockey rink.

The original ambitious proposal involved transforming the football stadium into a dual-rink facility, divided by a partition and new stands providing 10,000 additional seats.

Ciotti, a conservative allied with the National Rally, opposed the plan on the grounds that the resident football club, OGC Nice, would lose access to their home stadium for several months.

According to reports from the Associated Press, organisers initially investigated alternative temporary rink solutions within Nice at other local stadiums. However, Edgar Grospiron, the former Olympic freestyle skiing champion who leads the organising committee, confirmed that technical, financial, and scheduling analyses highlighted 'high costs and impact,' effectively ruling out those local alternatives.
The search for metropolitan alternatives has led organisers to focus on existing facilities that offer a minimum seating capacity of 10,000. In Paris, the Paris Entertainment Company has already submitted a formal bid, offering the use of the Adidas Arena and Accor Arena, both of which successfully hosted events during the 2024 Summer Games.

Simultaneously, investigations are underway in Lyon to determine if established large-scale venues in the city can sustainably accommodate the men's tournament. According to the Reuters, the committee is prioritising budget optimisation and the use of sustainable, pre-existing infrastructure over temporary builds.

Despite the proposed move for the men's competition, the Mediterranean city of Nice is still expected to host a significant portion of the ice-based programme. The women's ice hockey tournament remains scheduled for the city's exhibition centre, pending final approval from the International Ice Hockey Federation, while figure skating, short track, and curling events are currently unchanged.

Furthermore, organisers still plan to install a second temporary competition rink at the exhibition centre to support the remaining skating disciplines.

The organising committee is scheduled to present its findings to the executive board on 11 May. The final venue map is expected to be confirmed by the end of June, coinciding with the International Olympic Committee's decision on the full list of sports and events for the 2030 Games.

Grospiron emphasised that the committee is turning toward facilities that are better suited and more sustainable to ensure the Games meet high operational requirements without exceeding financial constraints.
