Marrakech stadium to undergo major overhaul ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco’s march toward 2030 has reached Marrakech.
The iconic Marrakech Stadium is set to close its gates in the coming days as bulldozers roll in for a sweeping renovation ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Morocco will co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
The facelift is not cosmetic, it’s transformative.
At the heart of the revamp is a decisive shift from multi-sport functionality to a football-only fortress.
The athletics track will be ripped out, bringing fans closer to the pitch and intensifying the matchday atmosphere.
Sections of the current stands will be reshaped, tightening the bowl and sharpening sightlines in line with FIFA’s technical standards.
Capacity is also set for a boost, rising from about 41,000 to roughly 46,000 seats following recommendations made during inspection visits.
The expansion forms part of a broader technical and logistical upgrade designed to secure full international certification for World Cup fixtures.
Officials say the stadium will remain closed until construction is completed and final approval granted.
In the meantime, local side Kawkab Marrakech will temporarily relocate their home matches to El Harti Stadium.
The overhaul in Marrakech is just one piece of Morocco’s nationwide infrastructure push as the country accelerates preparations for football’s biggest spectacle in 2030.
