Team Nigeria will surely glow in the Rock City – Mrs. Chikere
The Executive Director of Sports Development and Operations, Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC), Mrs. Sabina Chikere, has issued a clarion call to Team Nigeria at the 2025 West Africa Para Games, urging the nation’s athletes to rise to the moment and make Nigeria proud in Abeokuta.
In an exclusive interview with FIRST ZEALMEDIACAST BLOG's Oluwatobiloba Zeal-Adepetu Kumoye, Mrs. Chikere expressed unwavering confidence in the team’s ability to make a bold statement at the regional event.
“This is another opportunity for Nigeria to show its strength, discipline and resilience as we are known for. I believe strongly in our athletes—they have the skill, the heart, and the determination to dominate every event they compete in,” she said.
Mrs. Chikere, who was recently appointed as a member of the Organizing Committee of the Africa School Games, described the hosting of the para event by the Ogun State Government as “timely and commendable,” particularly given the demands of sports development across the region.
She praised the efforts of the Ogun State Sports Ministry, led by Honourable Wasiu Isiaka, noting that their readiness to host a competition of such magnitude speaks volumes about their commitment to inclusion and excellence in sports.
“What Ogun State has done is remarkable,” she said. “Their willingness to open their doors to athletes from across West Africa shows leadership. It shows a deep understanding that sports—especially para-sports—deserve visibility, investment and respect.”
Addressing the athletes directly, Mrs. Chikere encouraged them to remain focused, disciplined and united, reminding them that they carry the hopes of millions.
“Compete with integrity, honour and pride,” she urged. “When you wear the green and white, you represent every Nigerian—young and old—who believes in your talent. The whole country is behind you, praying for you, cheering for you, and expecting greatness.”
She emphasized that para-athletes have consistently demonstrated exceptional courage and consistency, often overcoming far more obstacles than many realize.
“Our para-athletes inspire the nation,” she noted. “Their stories, their perseverance, and their victories are symbols of what is possible. I know they will step onto that stage in Abeokuta and remind West Africa who Nigeria is.”
As the Games intensifies, Mrs. Chikere reaffirmed her belief that Team Nigeria will return from Abeokuta with medals and memories that will further cement the country’s reputation as a powerhouse in para-sports.
