Senegal eye AFCON hosting rights as 2029–2035 bidding race heats up

With the 2025 AFCON just 26 days from kickoff and the East African trio of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda already gearing up for their 2027 co-hosted edition, the battle for the next decade of Africa’s biggest football showpiece has quietly shifted into high gear.

Plans for the 2029, 2031, 2033, and 2035 tournaments are already at an advanced stage, and one country is emerging early as a crowd favourite, Senegal.

The Teranga Nation, fresh off years of footballing growth and continental success, is preparing to step boldly into the hosting arena. 

And they are not doing it alone. Across the border, Gambia has thrown its weight behind Senegal, openly backing their neighbours to secure one of the coveted AFCON slots.

For Senegal, a nation with improving infrastructure, rabid football culture, and recent international victories, hosting AFCON would be the next giant stride. 

For Gambia, supporting Senegal is both strategic and symbolic, an embrace of regional unity and a belief that West Africa can deliver another world-class tournament.

With bidding interest rising and CAF expected to intensify consultations in the coming months, the stage is set for a fierce contest. And as it stands, Senegal is ready, willing, and revving up for the fight.
