The 9th edition of the National Youth Games came to a spectacular close on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State, South-South, Nigeria, with a vibrant display of culture, music, and athletic pride.
In a dramatic shift of dominance, Team Lagos dethroned perennial champions Delta State to claim the overall title, marking a new chapter in youth sports excellence.
In a thrilling showcase of talent and competitive spirit, Lagos topped the medal table with 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals.
Delta followed closely with 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze, while Edo State secured third place with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze.
Bayelsa State finished fourth with 18 gold, 12 silver, and 25 bronze, and Kwara State rounded out the top five with 15 gold, 10 silver, and 19 bronze.

★ MALLAM SHEHU DIKKO, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), delivering a message on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praised the Games as a beacon of national unity and youth empowerment.
“What we have witnessed here in Asaba is the triumph of unity, resilience, and youthful potential. These young athletes are the heartbeat of our nation’s future, and the Federal Government remains committed to nurturing their dreams and investing in grassroots sports development.”
★ RT. HON. SHERIFF OBOREVWORI, Executive Governor of Delta State, in his closing remarks, expressed pride in Delta’s role as host and commended the athletes for their discipline and dedication.
“Delta State is proud to have hosted the 9th National Youth Games, where the strength of Nigerian youth and the unifying power of sports were once again on full display.”
★ HON. BUKOLA OLOPADE, Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee and Director General of the NSC, applauded all stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the Games.
“This year’s Games have set a new benchmark in both organization and competition. On behalf of the National Sports Commission, I extend our gratitude to the Delta State Government, our partners, and the Nigerian people for their unwavering support. We will build on this momentum to ensure the National Youth Games remain the foundation of talent discovery in Nigeria.”
The closing ceremony was a vibrant celebration, featuring cultural performances, musical showcases, and a parade of athletes — a fitting finale to a historic event that crowned Lagos State as the new powerhouse of youth sports in Nigeria.
