SSA Adeboye flags off ShowtimeXIII Flag Football League, hails Sport as Nigeria’s next big youth movement

The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, has officially flagged off the ShowtimeXIII Flag Football League season, performing a ceremonial “Throw Off” at the Showtime Sports Arena in Lekki, Lagos, on Sunday.

The symbolic gesture set the stage for the thrilling opening game between LA Knights and Lagos Rebels, which ended in a resounding 34–7 victory for the Knights.

Speaking at the event, Adeboye lauded the passion, vision, and commitment of the league’s President, Azeez Amida, for sustaining the growth of flag football in Nigeria and investing heavily in youth development.

“Thank you very much for your time, your resources, and for giving everything you have to make this a big deal for everyone. I can assure you that Showtime Flag Football has come to stay, and I am with you all the way,” Adeboye said.

The SSA, who took time to tour the state-of-the-art facilities at the Arena, expressed admiration for the quality of infrastructure, the vibrant commercial activity, and the massive turnout of fans — men, women, and young people — who trooped out to witness the season opener.

“This arena is a testament to how far the game has come. The facilities are superb, the atmosphere is electric, and the commerce around the game shows the potential of sports as both entertainment and an economic driver,” he remarked.

This season, ShowtimeXIII will feature 10 teams competing over 13 weeks of action, with fixtures designed to keep fans fully engaged until the grand finale. Organizers have also promised improved fan experiences, stronger community involvement, and more innovations to elevate the game’s profile.

With the presidential adviser’s endorsement, ShowtimeXIII continues to establish itself as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sports platforms, inspiring a new wave of opportunities for youth empowerment, talent development, and sports entrepreneurship.
