Uruguay head to World Cup without Suárez as Bielsa unveils final squad

Uruguay will travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup without legendary striker Luis Suárez after coach Marcelo Bielsa omitted the veteran forward from his final 26-man squad announced on Sunday.

Suárez, 39, retired from international football in September 2024 after his final appearance against Paraguay but had hinted at a possible return if the national team needed his experience.

However, Bielsa opted against recalling the former captain despite his impressive form for Inter Miami CF, where he scored six goals in 11 MLS matches this season.

The decision comes after a turbulent period between player and coach. Suárez had publicly criticized Bielsa's management style, claiming it created divisions within the squad.

Although the striker later said he apologized, it was not enough to earn a place on the plane to North America.

Uruguay's squad will be led by key stars including Federico Valverde, Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez, while striker Federico Viñas is among the attacking options.

The omission marks the first time since the 2010 World Cup that Uruguay will compete at football's biggest tournament without Suárez, signaling a significant generational shift for La Celeste.

Uruguay will begin their Group H campaign against Saudi Arabia in Miami on June 15 before facing Cape Verde on June 21.

Their final group match will be against Spain in Guadalajara on June 26.
