Ghana has been dealt a major setback ahead of their opening World Cup match against Panama in Toronto after midfielder Thomas Partey was denied entry into Canada following the refusal of his visa application.

The 32-year-old, who currently plays for Villarreal CF, will be unavailable for Ghana's first group-stage fixture after Canadian authorities declined to grant him entry from the team's training base in Boston, United States.

World football governing body FIFA confirmed the development in a statement, stressing that it has no role in immigration decisions made by host nations.

"FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas," the organisation said. "The host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country."

Partey has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to allegations made by four women between 2020 and 2022.

The former Arsenal FC midfielder is due to stand trial next year and has not been convicted of any offence.

Canadian immigration regulations state that individuals who have committed or been convicted of a crime may be deemed inadmissible to the country.

While Partey has not been convicted, Canadian authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific reasons behind the visa refusal.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the United States Customs and Border Protection noted that Partey was permitted to enter the United States despite the pending legal proceedings.

"The US is aware of the pending court case for Mr Partey; however, at this time, he has not been convicted of a crime and was admitted to the United States after being issued a visa," the official said.

The absence of the experienced midfielder is a significant blow to Ghana's preparations, with Partey regarded as one of the team's most influential players and a key figure in the heart of midfield.

His unavailability leaves Ghana coach Otto Addo facing an early selection challenge as the Black Stars seek a positive start to their World Cup campaign against Panama.

Ghana have yet to indicate whether they will seek a replacement arrangement or appeal the decision before their opening match.
