Nigeria loses 2031 African Games hosting rights to Uganda

Nigeria has suffered another major setback in its quest to host a flagship international sporting event after losing the bid to stage the 2031 African Games to Uganda.

The decision was confirmed during the Extraordinary Session of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Youth, Culture and Sports (STC-YCS5), held virtually on June 2, 2026.

Sources familiar with the bidding process revealed that Nigeria's proposal was rejected due to numerous technical and administrative shortcomings. The bid document was reportedly riddled with errors and lacked the level of professionalism expected for a project of such magnitude.

Observers noted that sections of the submission appeared to have been lifted from Nigeria's unsuccessful bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with some reference numbers and details left unchanged. The apparent oversight raised serious concerns about the country's preparedness and credibility to host Africa's biggest multi-sport event.

In contrast, Uganda secured the confidence of member states and was officially awarded the rights to host the 15th African Games in 2031. The successful bid represents a landmark achievement for the East African nation and reflects growing confidence in its ability to deliver a world-class sporting spectacle.

Beyond the hosting decision, the meeting also adopted the Revised African Games Fundamental Regulations, a framework designed to enhance governance, transparency, accountability and operational efficiency in the organization of future Games.

Ministers further reaffirmed their commitment to global anti-doping standards, stressing the importance of timely contributions to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the promotion of clean sport across the continent.

The session concluded with a renewed pledge by member states to advance youth development, strengthen cultural exchange and leverage sport as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation in line with the African Union's Agenda 2063.

While Uganda celebrates a historic triumph, Nigeria's failed bid once again highlights the critical importance of meticulous planning, attention to detail and professionalism in the highly competitive process of securing major international sporting events.

With the hosting rights now secured, Uganda will begin preparations to welcome thousands of athletes and officials from across Africa for what promises to be a landmark edition of the African Games in 2031.
