Modrić backs Pérez ahead of Real Madrid Presidential election

Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić has publicly thrown his support behind club president Florentino Pérez ahead of the upcoming Real Madrid presidential election on June 7.

The veteran midfielder signaled his backing by sharing an Instagram photo of himself embracing Pérez after Real Madrid’s triumph in the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final, adding two white heart emojis to the post.

Modrić joins a growing list of former and current Madrid stars supporting Pérez’s bid for re-election. Former teammates Karim Benzema, Casemiro, Lucas Vázquez and Pepe have all publicly endorsed the long-serving president. Club legends Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo Nazário also recently praised Pérez during a campaign event.

Pérez faces competition from businessman Enrique Riquelme, who is campaigning on a promise to increase the number of Spanish players in the squad and strengthen Real Madrid’s contribution to the national team.

The election is the club’s first contested presidential race in two decades, with members set to vote after a disappointing trophy-less season. Pérez has served unopposed since returning to office in 2009.

Support for the incumbent has also come from the basketball community, with former and current Real Madrid stars including Luka Dončić, Felipe Reyes and others backing his campaign.
