Sweden's World Cup preparations have suffered a major setback after defender Emil Holm was ruled out of the tournament with a muscle injury, prompting the national team to call up Herman Johansson as his replacement.

The Swedish Football Association (SVFF) confirmed on Saturday that Holm will miss the global showpiece after sustaining the injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined for several weeks.

The 26-year-old right-back had been included in Sweden's World Cup squad announced on May 12, but his hopes of featuring at football's biggest event were dashed by the untimely setback. Holm spent the season on loan at Italian giants Juventus from fellow Serie A side Bologna and was expected to play a key role in Sweden's campaign.

Reacting to the news, a devastated Holm expressed his disappointment at missing the tournament.

"I have fought my whole life to represent my country in a World Cup ... and to have it taken away by an injury. It hurts so much," he said in a statement.

The SVFF moved quickly to fill the vacancy, drafting in 28-year-old midfielder Herman Johansson, who plays for FC Dallas. Johansson has already joined the Swedish camp in Stockholm as preparations continue ahead of the tournament.

Sweden will begin their Group F campaign against Tunisia in Guadalupe, Mexico, on June 14 before crossing into the United States for their remaining group-stage fixtures.

The Scandinavians will face Netherlands in Houston before rounding off their group matches against Japan in Arlington, Texas.

While Holm's absence leaves a significant gap in Sweden's defensive options, Johansson now has an unexpected opportunity to make his mark on the World Cup stage as the Swedes aim to navigate a challenging Group F and progress to the knockout rounds.
