Wenger heads FIFA’s new Technical Study Group

FIFA has unveiled the Technical Study Group (TSG) that will dissect every match at the World Cup, and the lineup reads like a coach’s dinner party.

Arsène Wenger leads the panel as FIFA Chief of Global Football Development, joined by a roll call of recognisable football minds including Jürgen Klinsmann, Tobin Heath, Gilberto Silva, Otto Addo, Jayne Ludlow, Michael O’Neill, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Paulo Wanchope, Aron Winter, and Pablo Zabaleta.

“The Technical Study Group helps identify trends in the game, prepare future generations for football’s development and contribute to making the sport more exciting by highlighting the qualities players will need in the future,” Wenger said.

FIFA Senior Football Expert Pascal Zuberbühler and Football Performance Insights (FPI) lead Tom Gardner, backed by analysts, data engineers, and data scientists working on-site in Miami and Dallas, and off-site in Manchester in the UK, will be the back team.

FIFA wants to feed broadcasters, participating teams, players and fans the richest performance data the tournament has ever produced. That comes via the Enhanced Football Intelligence service, developed by Wenger and the FPI team, which will deliver in- and post-match insights through augmented reality and traditional graphics across all 104 matches.

Wenger said: “With an unprecedented level of high-quality data, the TSG will be able to describe, analyse and interpret what is happening on the pitch in a way that inspires both technical experts and football fans. We are not only collecting more data than before but also trying to strike the right balance between technical expertise and data. At the same time, we want to share our technical observations in real time during the tournament.”

TSG members will work either stadium-side or from a dedicated performance suite in Miami, with access to six camera angles and thousands of live data points per match. They will also select the tournament’s individual award winners.

The group’s home base is the FIFA Training Centre platform, with real-time insights pushed out through its social channels and YouTube for the first time at a World Cup — a clear nod to where the next generation of football fans spend much of their time.
