Thiaw targets World Cup glory as Senegal unveil ambitious squad

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has declared that the Lions of Teranga are heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with “big dreams” and the ambition to “achieve great things,” as he unveiled a strong 28-man squad for next month’s tournament.

Speaking during Thursday’s squad announcement, the former Senegal international emphasized belief, balance and mental readiness ahead of what promises to be a demanding campaign in the United States.

“It’s a balanced and well thought out group to meet the demands of this World Cup, which is an intense competition,” Thiaw said.

The squad combines established leaders with exciting young talent, underlining Senegal’s determination to compete with the world’s elite once again.

Experienced stars such as Sadio Mane, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Edouard Mendy and captain Kalidou Koulibaly headline the list, while rising prospects including Lamine Camara, Ibrahima Mbaye and Bayern Munich youngster Bara Sapoko Ndiaye represent the country’s next generation.

Koulibaly’s inclusion comes despite the defender being sidelined since April with a thigh injury, a sign of the faith Thiaw continues to place in his experienced captain.

Senegal opens their World Cup journey on June 16 against Kylian Mbappe and France in New Jersey, in a repeat of the iconic 2002 World Cup opener where Senegal stunned the defending champions before reaching the quarter-finals.

But Thiaw dismissed suggestions that the France clash should dominate attention, insisting his team is focused on the bigger picture in Group I, which also features Norway and Iraq.

“Senegal has three opponents. Why focus on France?” Thiaw stated.

“We have a historical connection with France. But for me, it’s not a special match.”

His comments reflect a coach determined to keep his squad grounded despite the excitement surrounding the tournament opener. Rather than reliving past glories, Thiaw appears intent on building a new chapter for Senegalese football.

The Lions head into the World Cup following a turbulent few months after their controversial Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco. Senegal initially celebrated victory in January, only for CAF to later award the title to Morocco after disciplinary proceedings linked to Senegal’s walk-off during added time in Rabat.

Despite the off-field distractions and an ongoing appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Thiaw’s latest message was clear, Senegal are arriving at the World Cup united, ambitious and ready to challenge the biggest nations on football’s grandest stage.
